DHAKA: India’s border agency chief said he was working with Bangladesh to bring down the number of people killed along the two countries’ porous border.

The pledge to bring casualties to zero comes amid concern that Indian soldiers were too aggressive.

Indian border director U K Bansal told a news conference Saturday that steps had already been taken to cut the number of casualties.

He said six Bangladeshis had been killed by India’s Border Security Force this year. The number was 55 in 2009.

He said the two sides had discussed issues like illegal migration, smuggling and other cross-border crimes at a five-day border conference in Dhaka.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has repeatedly criticised the Indian force in recent years for killing too many Bangladeshis along the border.

Just another regular pledge with little hope of implantation on ground . India need to prove its pledge has any value on ground.

i think the the main reasons for reduction casualties are

1. Border fencing which is expected to be completed by Dec 2012 itself :D

2. Better cordination between BSF n Bangladeshi forces

Hope to achieve zero casualties n zero infiltration from next year onwards:yahoo:

You guys do your job and don't let people come near our borders, we won't kill them entering. For our pledge to be fulfilled, we need your support.

Its a two way street. Its not like that you allow hundreds of people to come near the border and then expect BSF not to shoot them down. Its about our national security issue.

Both has to work cooperatively and hold their end of the deal.

Starting with your pledge that you won't allow any person from Bangladesh as if people are crossing border, its fault in your system too.

The casualties r down from as high as 55 in 2009 to 6 so far this year what else proof do u guys want...:hitwall:

We r already doing unilateral fencing work which will benefit both nations as India will have reduced infiltration n BD will have less casulties;)

We should ask BD to build their own fence too if they want BSF not to kill their people. As simple as that.

Rules, promises, pledges are meant to be broken.:P

so when Any BD try to break rule of border crossing then india will break the pledge of zero casualties....

Paisa lagta hai thousands of kms fence banane main.

Well well well, when we were shooting everyone crossing, we had people trying to cross. Some were using ladders.

This looks to me as encouragement for people waiting in line. Tough days for BSF ahead.

I think this is a good move. Ruber bullets and tasers are the solution.

Your so-called solution has been applied for the last year and see what cr@p happened this year.

It is a pathetic excuse of "human rights" to allow border crossing in a country that is not theirs and is ours.

I wish BSF gives the govt The Finger and continues using actual bullets.

Rubber bullets are good deterent. Shooting should be only as last resort.

You skipped the main reason though- election is coming in Bangladesh! Shooting reduces awami popularity! Most probably Hasina had to beg it from india holding monmohon's leg!

Millions of such empty Pledges have been made before. Empty rhetoric won't be able to save the BAL clowns any longer.

Practice what you preach in the Palk Strait.

Keep your thieving fishermen out of Sri Lankan waters.
