India Plans Huge Investments In Defense Modernization

The Indian government has plans to make big investments in modernizing different sectors of the country’s armed forces.

“Now it is time to modernize, upgrade all the defense PSUs [public sector units] and ordinance factory boards,” says M.M. Pallam Raju, minister of state for defense.

Raju says the government is investing a “lot of money and effort” to promote these facilities, which the country has developed over a period of time with “great tenacity.” He says the amount of investment is going up and could be more than $945 billion [50 trillion rupees]:cheesy: as per security needs over next five years. The defense ministry is working toward parallel encouragement of the private sector to attain the goal, he says

“Unfortunately, as far as the army is concerned, we have been suffering because of cancellation of tenders due to black-listing of companies,” Raju says. “There is a quest to modernize our artillery, so we hope that in the next couple of years we will make significant progress.”

The government is also taking the issue of self-reliance seriously in the context of manufacturing artillery.

Forecasts for the Indian defense market are numerous and varied, but most project massive growth, especially compared to western markets. According to one forecast for 2011-2016 by iCD Research, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for all Indian defense expenditures is expected to rise to 13.08%. And while the country is eager to build its domestic industry, India remains one the world’s largest importers of military hardware, relying on imports to fulfill 70% of its defense requirements, according to the November report.

Yeh politician bhi,, sale marwayenge ek din. Kuch bhe bolte hain... Guys please let me know if either MM Pallam Raju is on drugs or I am on a dream???

Its a typing mistake for sure.

I really wish they do have cared for defense modernization not 945 billions but $ 100 billion one time investment + 4-5% of GDP every year.

He says the amount of investment is going up and could be more than $945 billion [50 trillion rupees]
I just can't believe Aviation Week made such a huge mistake. I mean they are reputed...I think its million and not billion...

Noup.. Unlikely.. India is spending $36 Billions a year and in next 5 years the most it can spend is $200 Billions approx. How would world invest 5 times more money than a country is actually able to absorb.. ? Not to forget Indian Economy is slowing down and it is unlikely for India to multiply its defence budget in coming few years. Also not all the defence budget is for forign purchases and the most India could spare in next 5 years would be roughly 50-60% of its total defence volume which would be roughly 100-120 Billions. Now this calculation makes investment of 8-9 times more money than the potential market is illogical.

Hmmmmmm
Now this seems very complicated.
India will certainly not spend $945bn in the next five years in defense.
India's entire Defense budget for the next 5 years should be around 300bn[assuming a stable 7-10% growth rate in gdp and around 2% defense expenditure]
So then just $945mn for mordernization would be hopelessly low.
Looks like the Minister of state for defense has specatacularly bothced up.:smokin:

i think its a typo . they probably mean 94billion $ :)
Yeah
$94.5bn seems to be the best explanation here.
Anyway it's a great news for all the Indians.
Just hope it doesnt end up in the pockets of our corrupt babus:partay:

no way in hell we are investing $945bn in next decade also...
