India place order for crashed C-130J replacement, MC-130J standard.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) will buy one more Lockheed Martin C 130J Super Hercules medium-lift aircraft apart from the 12 contracted for to make up for the loss of one plane in an accident in March.

The IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, told India Strategic magazine (..:: India Strategic ::.. Home Page: The authoritative monthly on Defence and Strategic Affairs. ) in an interview that the induction of the C-130Js, as also the heavy-lift Boeing C-17 Globemaster IIIs had "brought about a paradigm shift in our airlift capabilities".

Since we have an established logistics for the Hercs, then we should go for it. However, IAF must improve its standards of training with purchasing simulators for C-130Js. If they already have it, they should put more hours on the flight than now.

A lack of simultors was not the issue but the manouvre they were carrying out (a low-level, close formation simulated training mission) is incredibly dangerous with such mammoth machines. Where lessons can be learnt I'm sure they will be by the IAF but I don't think either of the above contributed to this accident. IIRC there was an issue with ground mapping and the boulder/rock the plane's tail struck had not been known to the pilots before hand so yes there are areas that need to be focused on.
