India, Pakistan 'cement' ties

JALANDHAR: Relations between India and Pakistan are slowly getting cemented, literally. Cement import from Pakistan, which began three years ago mostly through the train route through the Attari border, has grown exponentially and boosted infrastructure from real estate to highways.

According to All-Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association figures, while cement import stood at 11,316 MT in September 2007, when it first began, it shot up to 89,432 MT in May 2010. From July 2008 to June 2009, cement export to India was 6,34,456 MT while in the corresponding period in 2009-10 it rose to 7,22,967 MT.

"Initially, response to Pakistani cement was lukewarm due to apprehensions about its quality. But, slowly, its acceptability grew in the market and its price being lower than Indian brands, added to its demand," said Amritsar based M P Singh Chatha, authorised agent for Bestway Cement Company, a British Company which was among the first importers of Pakistani cement.

Why do you need a British company to import cement?? Thats strange..filing the white mans pocket?

And Pakistani cement at large is not of questionable quality infact it is exported to Americas, Europe and middle east however there are some small scale manufacturers who could be involved in quality compromise.

Personally I think the politics can be played on side and trade should go as normal. Trade will help ease tension and build public to public trust.

You are getting it wrong, that British firm was the first company from India to order Pakistani cement because it was cheaper to import. After that Indian companies also started to import from Pakistan.

And Pakistani cement at large is not of questionable quality infact it is exported to Americas, Europe and middle east however there are some small scale manufacturers who could be involved in quality compromise.

We are not saying that Pakistan produces low quality cement but as you know everyone have some doubts with first dealing so it was just that.

Personally I think the politics can be played on side and trade should go as normal. Trade will help ease tension and build public to public trust.

Yeah......at the end of the day it will benefit common people from both sides.

Cement as a commodity is scarce during times. Orders must be placed in advance. Pakistani cement is generally of good quality and unlike Chinese cement does not harden up after a short while due to sea transit. India's building boom has benefitted Pakistan since India needs cement and Pakistan is a more convenient supplier. It is all a matter of supply and demand. Politics aside when India needs a product and Pakistan is the most viable supplier then Pakistan will benefit as with cement.

News of that process:

"Cement made by Pakistan-based Lucky Cement Ltd and Maple Leaf Cement Factory Ltd could land in India within a month’s time, if the samples from these factories pass tests required to get ISI certification.

If successful, this would also be the first attempt by foreign cement manufactures to compete with local cement in retail and wholesale markets.

Mint on 16 May had reported that nearly a dozen foreign cement makers had applied to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to get an ISI certification, without which cement cannot be sold in India, the world’s largest cement market."
