India: Pak Rail team arrives today to buy engines

With the intention of acquiring locomotives from India to re-start its defunct train services, a three-member team of the Pakistan Railways Advisory and Consultancy Services Limited (PRACS), led by managing director Mohammed Junaid Quareshi, will arrive in the Capital for a two-day visit on Thursday.

As reported in the April 21 edition of the Hindustan Times, Pakistan has pitched an upgraded offer to buy or take on lease about 100 railway engines from India.

Of the 520 locomotives in the Pakistan Railways (PR), only 76 were operational in March 2012.
:woot:An acute shortage of locomotives has forced the Pakistan Railways to suspend operations of as many as 128 passenger trains.

The PRACS team, comprising project director Mohammed Hyatt Malik and chief mechanical engineer Mobinuddin, will hold talks with its Indian counterparts at the Railway Infrastruture Technical and Economic Services (RITES). The team will also meet private players, including Escorts India Limited, to explore options of off-the-shelf purchase of compressors, braking systems and other components that the Pakistan Railways need to retrofit its defunct engines.

"This is an exploratory visit, which will be followed by a bigger delegation of the Pakistan Railways," sources said.

The relatively cheaper cost of Indian train engines has attracted Pakistan to the country. The manufacturing cost of a state-of-the-art engine comes up to $2.4 million in India, as opposed to the average cost of $ 3-4 million elsewhere.

The Pakistan Railways also wants to buy or lease older-generation train engines, which come at a much lesser price tag of $1.4 million.

Given the miserable state of finances in the Pakistan Railways, the option of taking engines on lease is considered more practical. Indian train engines are usually given out on lease for Rs. 900 per hour, or Rs. 21,600 per day.

They are also likely to discuss liberalised visas and diplomatic immunity for Indian Railways engineers visiting Pakistan to provide technical assistance.

We should not give them as, if there is some problem with mishandling, improper use or sabotage they will get an excuse to blame India and make conspiracy theories.

.
we must not sell our engines... this is just an invitation to problem.

That's a very strange request. Are you suggesting that we refuse to make profit pursuing selfish business ventures......which really just helps our industries and ours alone ? Its not like rail engines are closely guarded critical pieces of technology. Here in India we make 'em like candy.....just the engines tho'...I'm no big fan of the amenities offered.

.
I think they must be given the engines...lets keep the emotions aside and do the business if its profitable to sell engines. Let them also try Indian engines which are of much better quality than the chinese engines...which i guess they have used it in the past.

They tried the Chinese option first. It was rather dismal. I remember reading an article elaborating on the worthlessness of Chinese rail engines. Especially the ones given away as part of the welfare schemes and " soft-loans ".

I think we should sell them the engines!
we should try to make better relation with pakistan.
After the avalanche which buried 100+ soldiers....citizen from both the countries wants to patch up.
this is a good step:tup:

Problem is not with Pakistan…Problem is China…First of all it will go to china …and those fellows will start faking dirty engines… And finally Pakistani will come with n number of excuse…And end of the day we will get bad name.

To be honest though; I don't think a lot of people ever noticed such an incident happened across the border.

. . .
i don't think selling them engines will make any issues unless they won t reversed engineered it and mass produced cheap copies:P

Even I think so...But this is next to impossible...History says all....whenever we have started this type of activity...we got backstabbing... Believe every Indian can understand this...So we must not believe them at any cost…Asia is Just a chess board for west… To control China they are supporting India…to control India they are supporting Pakistan and other small nation against India....
