India one step back in South China Sea

yeah, as peace loving as being the largest weapon buyer in the whole world.
Yet manages to spend less (of its GDP) on defence than you and spends far more on its poor (unlike you). We can all skew the figures but India has one of the biggest economies in the world so it is only natural that they buy a lot of weapons. If Pakistan had the same size economy as India but spent the same %of GDP on defence as they do now then Pakistan would be the biggest arms buyer in the world. I don't see how this is a bad thing (clearly what you are implying by posting it here) because India's defence budget (for its size) is incredibly modest.

The local defense manufacturing industry is in nascent stage, If India did not import, then India will be another Tibet or Palestine. Seems the increase defense budget had spoiled the sleep of India's neighbors!

Yes, But if China repeatedly hurts India's interest like by doing development works in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, aids Pakistan with weapons for free. What option does India have?

It is not that only China can hurt India all the time!

So you do admit India's alliance in SCS is to hurt China's interests in the area. The reason I say that is because many member of you country here claim India's position in SCS is purely for commercial purposes. As long as you show your cards, no problem, we'll deal with it accordingly.

@Humanfirst

As long as India's position is clear in SCS China will deal with it.

ONGC-Videsh going ahead with South China Sea exploration - The Economic Times

AGARTALA: State-owned ONGC-Videsh will go ahead with the exploration of oil in the South China Sea despite China's objections, a top company official said here Tuesday.

"ONGC-Videsh was selected through an international bid to explore oil in South China Sea. There is nothing wrong with it," Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) chairman and managing director (CMD) Sudhir Vasudeva told reporters.

"If there is any dispute in the South China Sea, it is between China and Vietnam. If there are territorial rows, it's for those parties involved to sort them out. India is not involved in these affairs," he said.

Vasudeva was reacting to China's objection to joint exploration by ONGC-Videsh and a Vietnamese oil company in the South China Sea.

He said as for ONGC-Videsh's exploring oil in the South China Sea, it was simply commercial activity without any political connotations.

Sorry we cannot live with hypocrisy..If you can do construction work and station soldiers in UN recognised disputed territory of pak administered kashmir we have every right to explore oil in south china sea.

In all honesty, can you say that isn't fair..?Mr fanlin monk

ONGC to go ahead with oil exploration in South China Sea

Vasudeva said, "If there is any territorial dispute between China and Vietnam they are supposed to sort out their problem. It is purely a commercial activity for us."

You position is fair enough that India allies with Vietnam is a payback for AJK. But your government seems to the one who is hypocritical.

yeah, as peace loving as being the largest weapon buyer in the whole world.

Well till 2007 china had that title of largest weapon buyer in the world...
We are just catching up, with our defence budget. is just half of them....
U r just hypocratic in ur post....

No? Your government forcing her oil company to stay on an oil venture in which the company already declared unprofitable. Then your government turn around and tell the world that her oil company staying because of commercial activities. What do you call that? What is a commercial activity?

Monk- ONGC is a state owned company- it is not only about profit/ loss.. ONGC has to consider strategic/ political considerations along with economic considerations for GOI...

Precisely, if you follow our discussions I have no problem with that. India can use ONGC as a political piece but she should not claim ONGC stay on the block is to make money knowingly there is no money to make there.

Why do the vietnamis need India to explore their natural resources? They can be better off with Japanese and US companies
who are much more advanced and well equipped in Exploration technology. This is really pathetic on Vietnam's part. They are
relying on a aggresive day dreaming paper tiger.

On topic: India in S.china sea can be termed as a folklore. They are trying to punch way above their weight.

Looks like India wants to pick a fight with China simply because India launched the Agni 5 missile and have the blessing of Uncle SAM.

Which one..? Aakash or, Spyder ..?

What you say or Indian member say didn't make any difference to both Government policies.
ONGC is public company. It looks for collective good. All Indian PSU do the same.
No one is going to deny its a strategic move. Just no one accepting it officially. But that move has already made difference. China is not being that offensive it used to be 2/3 years ago. China is on talking table and talking on various issues. That's good decision from them and GOI. So GOI will not hurt China's interest for nothing. But it will not keep the ACE card down. If ONGC thinks its unprofitable then it has to search some profit staying there and not from backing off. So it will be more possibility that India will focus its work on non disputed blocks.
On China's view no matter what our megaton friends say, India is a profit market plus it's on discussion table. So no need to go crazy. USA and India made a huge share of Chineses goods. USA market is upto saturation in consumer products. Indian market for consumer products is in mid course. So India in more worth to china than china to India.

To all the warriors here who think there is possibility of war even short scale. They are in dreams. I call them war morans. Its business. Why China back off from Iran ??? Avoid sanctions when it can get oil from other sources. Chinese are making multibillions in USA market. Last thing china want is ban on its consumer products when economy is slowing. Same apply for India.
Trade balance between USA/India vs China is in China's favour. So China would not disturb it.

I personally don't think SCS will be flash point in near future. China will be aggressive there. No doubt but it will not drag it to war.
China is growing no doubt but it has to gain a lot to catch up with USA economically.

I don't understand why China is crossing a UN approved line. There's nothing wrong in what ONGC has been operating in; it is with Vietnam government's permission and this is a bilateral issue. Claiming something just for the heck of it doesn't make it somebody's.

What about the billions worth of trade that flows through the ocean? Just naming a sea or ocean by your name (south China sea) doesn't make the ocean yours just like it is the same in our case. You don't see us running around claiming Indian Ocean as 100% Indian owned.

CCP must understand that a show of force would not earn them respect.
