India not alarmed over US supplying drones to Pakistan: IAF chief

India is not perturbed over the US supplying drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to Pakistan as long as they are used against
Taliban militants, Chief of Air Staff PV Naik said on Friday.

"So long as the drones are used against Taliban militants, we have no problem," Naik told reporters here on the sidelines of an event.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) chief said he was not unduly concerned over such a development as it had no bearing on India.

US defence secretary Robert Gates said in Islamabad late on Thursday that the US planned to provide Pakistan with a dozen Shadow aerial drones to help its military to take on the Taliban militants.

The unarmed Shadow drones are three metres long with a wingspan of 14 feet. Their sensors and cameras feed images back to operators on the ground. They are smaller than the armed Predator and Reaper aircraft.

The US has been employing armed drones for missile strikes against al-Qaida and Taliban operatives in Pakistan, fuelling anti-American sentiment there and attracting public condemnation from Islamabad.

Naik, however, said the UAVs would be part of the country's aerospace defence capability in future.

"With the accent shift to unmanned flights and missiles, technological advances are sure to revolutionise military affairs in the future also," Naik said, delivering the fourth Air Chief Marshal LM Katre Memorial Lecture here.

Naik said the IAF foresaw greater specialisation, an increased dependence on unmanned vehicles (drones) and force enhancement by integration of space-enabled capabilities.

"We believe that synergising core competencies of each service and all organs of national power by developing effective interfaces is the way forward," Naik told about 300 serving and retired air warriors and aviation officials.

The lecture was organised by the Air Force Association of Karnataka branch with the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and Aeronautical Society of India (Bangalore branch).

Katre, who was Chief of Air Staff in 1984-85, was also chairman of HAL during his tenure as air chief.

Neither would I. These are after all low tech unarmed drones. This just confirms that the Yanks are at it again.

India concerned over drones sale to Pakistan

Amid U.S. plans to sell drones to Pakistan, India wants assurances that such military hardware is not targeted at New Delhi.

India is understood to have conveyed to the U.S. that military assistance to Pakistan has often been used against India. “The U.S. has been sensitised to our concerns,” a reliable source said here.

While India has no objection to economic aid given to Islamabad, it has repeatedly opposed the sale of cutting-edge military equipment to Pakistan that have been used against India.

U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates, who has met Pakistani leaders, on Friday disclosed that the U.S. planned to supply 12 RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to Pakistan to aid its battle against the Taliban.

Interacting with the media, he said the U.S. has set aside $1 billion in its Coalition Support Fund to provide weapons and equipment to Pakistan for the war against terror. The drones would be part of this package.

The Shadow UAVs will help build the Pakistan Army’s capacity for intelligence gathering, he said. It is not clear whether there would be conditions attached to the sale of these drones specifying their use only in Taliban areas.

Similar message as Post 1 but with different heading. I would like to speculate here... What would be the reaction there is any clause like Pakistan cannot use these drones apart from Taliban hit areas...Technically speaking Pak Army is asking for predators to fight with Taliban so how will she react if under India pressure US impose the above mentioned clause on these drones???

Does India have UAV.when we will be having UCAV's..

What the fcuk is USA offering and why the hell are getting this?. Don't we have many of these types made in Pakistan? What about the FALCO? Can somebody please elaborate why are these 12 planes so special for Pakistan when they will come with seals and limitations of usage?

Robert Gates has played a double game in South Asia. Just view his comments in India and then veiw his comments in Pakistan. He goes in India we want to make it a millitary partner but in Pakistan he goes we have no intention to. Pakistan in my opinions should not go into North Waziristan until America gives it an incentive.

I agree with you mate, these UAV's are of no use to PAF. you might be having better versions of these obsolete spy planes. this is just a goodwill gesture from US to pacify growing opposition of USAF's increased activity inside Pak territory. These ppl are smart a$$ I must say.
On a different note, while used against any country with even decently advanced capability, these would be easy pickings for anti-aircraft missiles, but these UAV's might still be usefull in combating Taliban. Accpet it if they are giving it free of cost to you. Otherwise- say NO THANKS. PAF is very capable air force, one of the best in the world ( I have no doubts about that). Chhoti si chiz ke liye kisi ka ehsaan kya lena. Wat u say??

Your bolded part say it all...Didn't it??? The intent of drone technology is to help their offensive against Taliban...Now if they don't like it just refuse it..but in case they go for it then i am sure these UAV's have something good in them...as you just said PAF is really good and they won't be naive to accept something which is obsolete...Don't you think so??

Its a frikin toy why would anybody get alarmed. Thats like general kapoor getting alarmed over the RC helicopter i sent to my cousin

You are right. but one thing I couldnt understand is that US and Pak are fighting taliban jointly, this is supposed to be a temporary arrangement till taliban is uprooted. In essence, therefore, once the Taliban are defeated, these drone attaks will cease too. Then onwards, will the UAV's be handed over to US by PAF? Highly unlikely. so, As far as Pak is concerned, they should press for armed UAV's (whatever they are called) that can be used as a long term strategic weapon. IMO, whether Pak or India, coalitions & partnerships should not only be mutually beneficial, they should be equally beneficial too for both the parties involved. Otherwise in long term, differences and doubts evolve (as has happened in case of US & Pak - the relationship has become like what exists between a Girl & her Boyfreind - Love on the brink of breakup. Both knows that the breakup will hurt both of them deeply, but its more or less an eventuality now, bound to happen sooner or later), both are waiting for other to initiate the breakup, so that both can freely cozy up with their respective new prospective long term partners- China & India.
Pak should start treating US as a cash cow (a Management term), extract as much milk as possible before the lactation period ends.

This is left over junk from Iraq war.
These are useless against Taliban and this is exactly why US never bothered to use it them selves against Taliban.

On the other hand Falco definately is better but it is envisaged for PAF.
