India moves closer to acquiring Heron TP

The Indian air force is moving ahead with implementation of a plan to purchase the Israel Aerospace Industries Heron TP unmanned air vehicle, having joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) in June.

India is operating the Heron 1 and other smaller Israeli UAVs, but the purchase of a strategic system such as the Heron TP had until recently been put on hold.

Israel is not a member of the regime, which aims to restrict the proliferation of missile technology, but has agreed to export its strategic weapon systems only to member countries.

Last year, India’s Economic Times claimed the government had quietly approved the purchase of 10 armed Heron TP UAVs from Israel. New Delhi has also previously shown interest in the Israeli Arrow surface-to-air anti-ballistic missile system.

By joining the MTCR, India will be able to open negotiations to purchase the Heron TP. While the Arrow interceptor is funded partially by the USA, the Heron TP can be exported.

The Heron TP is currently heavily used for classified missions for all the Israeli defence forces branches, and has been selected by the German air force for its surveillance UAV requirement.

The UAV has a 40h endurance, maximum take-off weight of 5,300kg (11,685lb), and carries a typical mission payload of 1,000kg.

how does it compare to the Predator ?

The deal to acquire 10 of these was already cleared by the government in 2015 for $400 million.
This was expected to be delivered within a year as of 2015 but as you can see ...

The way forward would be to engage IAI in a joint production for the future.

they didnt signed the deal because mtcr i think

Did Israel at any point have any reservations about its proposed sale to India ?
The hold orders were probably due to internal budgetary constraints rather than MTCR.

Our drone fleet now has a total of 176 Israel-made drones including 108 IAI Searchers and 68 unarmed Heron-1 aircraft.

i think why didnt india buy hermes 450 or hermes 900

What i meant was , did Israel have any problem with selling an offensive weapon to a non MTCR state ?
As the possibilities of the delay you mentioned earlier could be related to the signing of MTCR

Israel is not a member state of mtcr . though US already doing business With it regarding missiles drones and air defiance systems . beyond 300 km .

And India already signed deal with it when India was not a member state of mtca ..

So mtcr is not a issue in harone tp deal .

And it is better then unarmed predator .

70 hours flight endurance and range 7000 + kms .

We should go for it and if possible avenger ucav.

Israel defines export policy for Heron TP UAS

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) will have to sign joint development agreements with companies in countries that want to operate medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned air systems such as its Heron TP, Israeli defence ministry sources say.
The requirement stems from the fact that Israel - despite not signing the international missile technology control regime (MTCR) - complies with its guidelines.

The whole point is the delay this time may not be from the Indian end , Israel might not be willing to sell the same due to their inherent policy.
