India may restart Iran oil import

Uncle Sam's pressure has been there for a long time. We didn't budge earlier then why now suddenly ? There's something more to it.

It has not happened suddenly ...India has been cutting down imports from Iran gradually since last 2 years ...

The downturn that our economy has taken has suddenly dried up our leverage and options !!!

At least, end subsidies on private vehicles for a start. So that people who drive SUVs don't get their lifestyle subsidized by the taxpayer. Keep subsidizing public transport and trucks carrying essential items, for now.

Things are going to get worse ....attack on Syria ...is further going to and destabilize oil prices and oil supply !

This also has implications for our remittances from middle east ....

we have over 6 million Indians working in middle east ...any disturnabce in middle east can have impact over billions of dollars of remittances that india earns from there .....

I just hope if they can do that balancing act ....anyway as time is passing by UPA and so consequently India is finding itself mired in deeper and deeper mess !!!

Yes, there has been a gradual cut down but I never thought there would be a complete stoppage.

We first committed blunder of voting against Iran under US pressure ....

Then under further US pressure we were forced to reduce our oil- imports from Iran

Now to go back to Iran ...especially after MV Desh-shanti ship detention drama ( which is yet to be resolved ) with what face we are going to ask for oil from Iran ?

bhosàdi ki Sonia gandu/ aur uske anmol chiraag chiuutiya gandhi ko bhejo :/ nanga kar ke

Why is India changing its Oil partners constantly ? One day its Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

Well no country does ever rely on single supplier ...for several reasons .

Besides diversification of energy sources and types is the most fundamental tenet of Energy security as it provides enough cushion against in event of obliteration of one or more sources of Energy !!!

It's a clever move from India to reduce their current account deficit.

However Iran may not be pleased being paid in Rupees instead of dollars, considering the recent fall in the value of the Rupee. It would also limit them to buying Indian exports with their earnings.

But Iran is in a tough spot, they can't really be choosy with customers at this point.

It's not a new thing, this agreement (of paying in rupees) had been reached a long time ago. It is the GoI's stupidity that they didn't utilize that opportunity to the max, and buy most of its crude from Iran instead of Iraq or Saudi. Well not entirely stupidity, American pressure played a part too. In the past, India and Iran have even bartered goods - wheat for oil, for example.

The fall in the value of the rupee shouldn't be a concern to Iranians. India would have to shell out more rupees for the same amount of oil. I'm sure that the transaction wouldn't be on a fixed rupee basis, since the rupee has always been volatile. India would pay whatever is the market rate of crude oil, but in pay it in rupees.

It is true that this limits Iran's choice of spending those rupees on Indian products. But that is also not a problem for them, because they do have a lot of things they can buy from India. Foodgrains, medicines and refined petroleum products being the most important among them. It is not just foreign currency, but also tangible goods like these that is hard for Iran to purchase on the world market, due to sanctions.

Which is why, as I said earlier, it is a win-win for both countries.

will it be so easy after demarche to ambassador of Iran for unconditional release of Indian ship ?

We have anyways have little options left besides to swallow our pride and fall in line ....

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian foreign ministry summoned Indian Ambassador to Tehran DP Serio Stava, and called for the release of an Iranian ship and its crews who have been detained in India’s Mundra port for more than 18 months.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi voiced the Islamic Republic’s deep concern over the continued seizure of the Iranian Ship, Diyanat, for more than one and a half years, and asked for the immediate release of the ship and its crew members.

Also during the meeting, Araqchi asked the Indian envoy to inform him of New Delhi's latest measures in the case, and expressed Tehran's deep concern over India's harsh and inappropriate treatment of the vessel crews.

The Iranian Vessel Diyanat and its nine crew members have been held for unknown and ambiguous reasons in Mundra port for more than 18 months now.

The ship’s crews have not been allowed to leave the vessel, and this has caused psychological problems for them, they said.

Farsnews
India also has seized an Iranian ship for 1.5 years? Are you really complaining about Iran seizing your ship?

Who tells you Iran seizing Indian ship is illegal? What if it actually did something wrong?

What we know is that Indian ambassador was summoned to foreign ministry today, no more details are out. Maybe you can search in local Indian media about it?

Regarding Iranian ship being detained for 18 months ....why there are no more details besides piece of news ?

Please provide more details e.g name , registration of ship , crew , location ( where exactly it is detained ) to verify the news ...

All reports regarding detention of Indian ship by iran clearly mention that it is against the international law i.e its illegal ....so must be condemned ....

Similarly if news of detention of Iranian ship by India is true ....and illegal ...then it also has to be condemned ....!!!

question is why Iran kept quite for past 18 months ....

This seriously questions veracity and authenticity of this news ....so my dear friend please post more details !!!

If this is going to happen, why not join the IP pipline? We can call it the IPI pipeline! China is already interested too and if they join, we could then call it IPIC or IPCI (etc...). This would be amazing considering that the TAPI pipeline is going nowhere. In the end, everyone benefits and it could potentially lead to regional tensions between our nations decreasing rapidly. Not only that, we would probably be able to withstand the sanctions, and if India and China are apart of the deal, sanctions would either be dropped or become irrelevant.

Just a thought, though it probably won't happen :(

Again ??? This has been discussed to death.

Last know stands are
- India want Iranian assurance for the pipe in Pak territory and NOT Pak assurance.
- Iran is nit willing do that and suggesting India should took Pak assurance for safty of oil and pipe.
- India and Pak having "good" relations over the last few decades , India isnt willing to risk its investment and supply line.

And I am sure even TAPI will have the same fate

Also, I'd like to point out that Iran wouldn't be able to give any real guarantees, unless they're lying or have actual military forces in Pakistan. That's not going to happen. If India wants to be apart of the deal, then it has no choice but to go to Pakistan.

It was just a thought, India is being replaced in the deal with China anyways.
