India had the opportunity to treat Pakistani teenager and anti-Taliban rights activist Malala Yousafzai, but lost the chance.

Fifteen-year-old Malala, who has become a symbol of girls' rights worldwide, was shot by Taliban attackers on October 9. Civil society groups in India and Pakistan, backed by some Awami National Party legislators in Pakistan, approached the Indian establishment to have Malala flown to a super-specialty private hospital in Mumbai for treatment, highly placed sources said.
Bat, according to sources, officials in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) hesitated on two counts: Malala did not possess valid travel documents, which could have easily been addressed, and such a move might seem like a ploy on India's part to score a brownie point on the back of a human tragedy.

When contacted, a PMO official said "there were indeed informal talks on the issue, but there was no formal proposal from any individual or group" to allow Malala to travel to Mumbai for treatment. Asked if India could have made the offer, he declined to comment.

Indian mediators were asked by the PMO to urge the Pakistani civil society groups and/or the Awami National Party to "make a request to India", sources told HT.

The process should begin from Pakistan, the mediators were told.

But by this time, Malala received preliminary treatment in a Peshawar hospital, where surgeons had managed to remove the bullet that had hit her skull.

She was then shifted to a military hospital and, significantly, a military statement reproduced by the BBC said that Malala be "shifted abroad to a UK centre, which has the capability to provide integrated care to children who have sustained severe injury".

The air ambulance was arranged by the United Arab Emirates and she was flown to London.
The Taliban has threatened to attack Malala again. Two other girls, who were in the school bus with her, were also injured in the October 9 attack.

Sources said key doctors in a super-specialty hospital had been spoken to and had shown willingness to take up Malala's case after addressing security considerations.

"Had India made the offer to treat her, it would have resonated throughout the world and helped build trust on both sides. We should have shed the timidity," said Mahesh Bhatt, filmmaker and a campaigner for people-to-people connect between India and Pakistan.

It is better she is getting treatment in a friendly country like Great Britain.

Full supports.

May Allah bless this sister/daughter of Pakistan with health & long life.

This has nothing to do with Indian defence.

A request from GOP would have been in order.

Yes India has world class medical facilities like UK infact India has exceeded europe in its medical quality and its health care system has just surpassed NHS.

she is not the first one to be shot and she won't be the last one.. it's a routine affair over there. India when ready will always find a suitable candidate for imported treatment :woot:

Lots of your kid's regularly get operated in my hospital.

Many of them free of cost. Their parent's put up in charity wards by us. Also free of cost.

Do you want them to go elsewhere because we are not a "friendly country"?

Directly why dont they say it that indian bureaucracy is just like lazy tattoo and now they are shedding crocodile's tears that someone will think so.
Those who really want to help they dont think about what others will think or if opposite party will take it as scoring brownie points.
India leadership and its idiotic redtapist lazy bureaucracy must learn how to offer help from hafeez saeed .how he offered help to usa even after knowing they being his enemy.

No politics on this ground. Period.

Yeah...Hafeez Saeed is a good example....You should have picked the other Pakistani who rightfully deserved Noble Peace Prize....if you really wanted to back your post without adding controversial piece.

But again, politics will be done on this issue too.

we didnt know india super power was just around the corner, its medical care is the toppest, bestest even surpassing the aliens

:woot:lol i'm not even married.

Don't troll, i don't wanna say this but i will say where were your these richs when indian people were held by Pirates in Arabian sea?

And it's their own decision but it's better go somewhere where they can get best service. It's simply stupid to leave Pakistani hospitals for india.

You could have checked with the countless Pakistanis who come for treatment and go back satisfied.

The questions remains, why should we welcome Malala? Yes, she did a great job by rising against the TTP tyrants and it's commendable. But that's not the reason to go overboard over it, thousands of citizens are being slaughtered by Talibans every year.

Well the thread is on right direction. Mockery of Indian health system rather than lack of trust issue and emergency protocols for benefits of civilians.

BTW Indian doctors do help Pakistani kids for free of cost. It simply means for humanity and saving life, keeping politics away from few issues. Its not for brownie point, its for saving those kids.

Seems like people are more interested in bashing each other rather than understanding what we lack.

Every thread shouldn't become same old raga of cheap shots.

You are just being obtuse now. I cannot help you further.
