China’s success in docking Shenzhou 9 craft and its three astronauts in space with an intention to build a station within the decade has sent uneasy ripples through the Indian fraternity.

The success is credited to an aggressive policy to synergise the space and military programmes.

Back home, many scientists feel the drive behind missions to put humans in space has lost its momentum and a rework on policies and programmes is needed.

Former Isro chairman Professor UR Rao told The Pioneer that India should build much larger launch vehicles. Of China, he said, “It’s a wonderful thing. This is their second docking. They are going ahead systematically with the manned programme while we have not started at all.”

“They (China) have 9-tonne payload vehicles, synergy between their defence programmes, rockets which can hit the target at 13,000 km,” Rao pointed out.

Another space scientist, on conditions of anonymity, told The Pioneer that Isro had a man mission blueprint to take over China in space programmes. “Isro is also pursuing a man mission to space, but two failures of GSLV have hit the programme. It will take another eight years to realise our dream of a space mission,” he added.

The scientist noted, “They are marching forward with a lot of aggression. Soon they will become the second country to have human space flight capabilities. We missed a great opportunity. By this time, we could have been halfway through in the space programme. But three years have been lost.”

IAF to select crew for India's 1st manned mission to space - Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Joining the project for country's first indigenous manned mission to space, Indian Air Force (IAF) has signed an MoU with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and is now planning to set up facilities for selecting the crew for the maiden flight.

Director General of Army Medical Corps ( AMC) Lieutenant General H L Kakria while replying to a query on participation of defence forces in country's first space mission said IAF is setting up facilities for the first round of selection process which will begin by 2020.

"IAF has entered into an MoU with the ISRO for long term space research. ISRO has supplied it with lot of equipments and the provisional time for first selection is 2020 and the original thing is likely to take place much later," Kakria told reporters here.

So even in the unlikely event that the Indian government meets their deadline (CWG anyone?)... it will still be around 2025 at the earliest. And that is assuming that everything goes well until then.

Whereas Iran is targeting to get their first astronaut into space by 2020 already, which means that Iran will likely beat India into space.

in building satellites india is doing fine.
we will have our gps by 2014, so we compete the bigger powers in that.
gslv lmv 3 can take 10000 to leo and lvm 4 15000 so yeah we got a heavy launch vehicle.
we have mastered reentry tech and are building a reusable system.


but china has done human launches, docking and will have a small space station, which we dont.

atleast by 2020 we should do human space flight and a small docking. if we dont they we lost it phucking big tiime...

Well I guess losing it would be having no capability to leave earth when an extinction event meteor hits it or when the sun explodes.

they had a gps before us but india will lauch first gps satellite in nxt 3 months. we will have it by 2014.

I do not know what is the intension of the OP, but it seems to be "Needless Trolling"
INDIA is not in a race with China, we are just in a quest to know more on the fields of our Interest.
Chinas space programs are a half a decade advanced than we are right now, but we care less on that gap, all we care is our growth and not that of CHINAs growth.
