India-Japan rail diplomacy is a setback for China’s One Belt, One Road initiative

Its a very silly title.. We should show some maturity when we write such articles and avoid such anti china or provocative titles. Especially when Chinese President has been a good figure for India and has tried to increase India China business relations. About High Speed Railway projects, I expect China to get a project soon.. Trying to win brownie points by makingfit look like China vs Japan is childish.

The recently concluded visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to India has been the focus of the international media in recent days. India and Japan inked seven high-profile pacts to ramp up engagement in key areas — economic, nuclear and defence cooperation.

Among the agreements signed, the Rs 98,000 crore deal to build India’s first bullet train network, which will link Mumbai and Ahmedabad, emerged as the most eye-catching issue, mainly because of the China factor. Tokyo and Beijing have competed fiercely to export their high-speed railway systems. Less than three months ago, Japan lost to China the chance to build Indonesia’s first high-speed railway. So, India’s decision to opt for Japan’s Shinkansen system came as a relief to Abe. Jakarta’s decision was based on financial considerations — China offered a highly concessional loan without a guarantee from Indonesia’s government. The Japanese seem to have leaned a lesson from this. In order to win the contract for the proposed 500-km railway in India, Japan agreed to offer a $12 billion loan at 0.1 per cent interest, to be repaid over 50 years.

The Indo-Japanese rail agreement is widely seen as a blow to China’s “high-speed rail diplomacy”. However, it is premature to conclude that China is out of the game. In fact, China just won the contract to assess the feasibility of a high-speed train between Delhi and Mumbai. No matter how slim, there’s still hope for China to export its high-speed train system to India. That is why the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman emphasised that there is high-speed railway cooperation between China and India, too.

However, there is reason for Beijing to worry about the Indo-Japanese synergy. Since late 2013, China has eagerly promoted the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st century Maritime Silk Road initiative (One Belt, One Road). India has been invited to join the project but so far, New Delhi has not committed itself to or indicated support for the initiative. The largest country of South Asia and the Indian Ocean region, India occupies a pivotal location on the Maritime Silk Road. A map released by state-run Xinhua News Agency shows Kolkata as a part of the Maritime Silk Road. If India declines to endorse the project, the Maritime Silk Road will have to be redrawn to bypass the ports of India.

Against this backdrop, India-Japan cooperation appears to damage China’s ambitious initiative. India alone may not be able to substantially challenge China’s ambition in South Asia and the Indian Ocean. But with finance and technology from Japan, India and others could choose an alternative way to develop their infrastructure.

Abe’s visit also sounded a new warning to Beijing. For the first time, an Indo-Japanese joint statement underlined the countries’ concerns about developments in the South China Sea, and requested other states to avoid unilateral actions that could lead to tensions in the region. Chinese scholars have repudiated the statement as meaningless, arguing that neither Japan nor India is party to the South China Sea issue. But it reminded people that India first mentioned the South China Sea dispute in the Indo-US joint statements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Washington last September. Despite China’s protests, India is again trying to build up its presence in the region.

Beijing is also warily watching the growing defence and nuclear cooperation between Delhi and Tokyo. After much talk about the chemistry between the two leaders, Modi and Abe have finally transformed their rapport into a political advantage. In China, Abe’s visit is being considered more an India-Japan strategic manoeuvre against Beijing than an attempt to improve bilateral economic ties.

There is no doubt that Beijing has been apprehensive of the growing proximity between India and Japan. It makes sense for China to be more proactive in pursuing a good-neighbourly policy towards India in order to persuade Delhi to keep a distance from Tokyo. On the other hand, India may ask China to provide similar financial packages to the one Tokyo inked with Delhi. India may emerge as the big winner of this round.

Fact is their have been border incursions from both the sides but they are not as widely reported in Chinese Media as in Indian Media.
Indian Media go bongo on the incursion news because of our history(1962) as well as you are our immediate neighbors (most powerful) with which we have a trust issue and our borders are not defined (according to China). While your Media have their plate full on the Americans.

Not say I want to generalise. But you shall realise the amount of trash news almost all Indian media produce daily. If there is no readers or unpopular, it will die off and yet such news continue with popularity. More or less show the widely accepted of these trash news and the readers mentality.

You must understand something - generally people the world over are stupid .. and they only understand stupid. Now you and I know better. But when the IQ hovers barely over 70 what is one to do? I don't even bother switching on my TV, although have tonnes of news channel subscribed. Just because except for nonsense nothing else comes. Like the Spy Pigeon from Pakistan .... unfortunately even PDF is going on the same route. Earlier there used to be good discussions and lots to learn, now just plain non sense .... 50 percent of the population is of average IQ and in the lower band that is about 89 .. so you can expect on average nonsense. I guess you and I can agree that the news is bullshit. I look forward to closer Indian and Chinese cooperation ..... the border dispute can keep forever ... (it really does not affect either of us until and unless we make moves against each other)

unfortunately with so much of print space available everyone can express an opinion and given certain media house's penchant for creating sensationalism, these sort of ill researched and devoid of any fact stories, can be read almost daily

Dumbo...any country that has hsr is free to do feasibility study...Chinese sought govt permission for study and it gave a go ahead !!
How do you think company calculates the building cost and operating cost for a tender...? it's by feasibility study!!
Whats the point of doing feasibility report with Chinese when deal is already done with Japanese

I think China will bag Chennai-delhi corridor!!
We cant have 2 different technologies. All future projects will be done by Japanese.

What has one belt got to do with China? CPEC is mostly China and ME specific, if SAARC were to link up with CPEC it would benefit them more than it would benefit China. CPEC on it's own is more than a viable project.

Really?
Because what you said just sounds stupid from a business perspective. India is the happening place. Pakistan is irrelevant when it comes to SAARC. India is a big market, as such for the Chinese better trade routes are more likely to pay off than a route to Pakistan. Transportation corridors for India are going to run through burma and into SE Asia. Pakistans corridor will not be reality unless security issue is resolved. Its still easier to ship containers on boats and use the blue ocean. Afghanistan, Pakistan could work together but at the end of the day, even China can't save them. You want prosperity and a competitive Pakistani economy than you'll want to start trading with India. It'll happen eventually. BTW, CPEC doesn't include China despite the name. China is building and funding CPEC, the route to China is NOT favourable given the ease of transporting oil or merch, via oceans. CPEC builds infrastructure in Pakistan as scheme at sometimes unfavourable and corrupt business deals. The Road to China is a stairway to no wear unless it links up with Afghanistan. Pipelines may be option for China but the only pipe line the Chinese have come up with is one from IRAN to Pak.
From what the oil and ME industry claims that pipe lines going through multiple nations is not workable, because of difference in "govt." Direct links a better option like the short route via Iran and Pak to Gawadar prt. which actually refines and ships the via oil tankers.
So not only is article bullsh1te. but fails to take into consideration the subcontractors. The bids, China has won for HSR as Japanese subcontractors and vis versa. The reason the Indians went with Japan, is because of the offset and ToT.
China got its HSR via the same route.

k so india get japanese trains. why is this somehow a "warning" to china? its hardly news that india doesnt like to rely on china.

More writers for hire than actual news. News is private business now. Seems though the internet, and access to multiple content is the reason for this. Not all states want to control the news to such and extent as NK or China or even Russia.
However, take english articles with pinch of salt. perhaps 10% of India actually `reads` English so the real news, in Hindi, Gujurati, Punjabi, etc.. with is 80% isn`t as war warmongering towards China. Different audience.

Actually talked to prof, of East Asian studies. Well known writer, anti CCP, lives in the west. Writes mostly about domestic CCP issues etc.. but he told me that the CCP has India policy which is negative. IE in the decades earlier and still today, India is portrayed as ``poor. corrupt, lacking efficient govt and laging behind China` Now this is the same as the US media does. But the CCP mouth piece news òpinons will write these articles to protect CCP rule. India is biggest excuse for the CCP to deny Chinese democracy and keep CCP in power. So, again, India is conquering at least the CCP with out soldiers. But then again, dictators are paranoid.
Also Indian news, comes in many flavours. No one persons in India has monopoly on the news.
These people that write also have to compete with other papers and publishers including bollywood ent. news which is non stop debauchery.
