Charge-sheeting of marines: Italy conveys concern to envoy


The Indian Ambassador to Italy was called to the Italian Foreign Ministry on Saturday, in a continuing expression of Rome's annoyance with the charge-sheeting of two of its marines by the Kerala Police a day earlier.

Hours after the Kerala Police had filed the charge sheet in a Kollam court on Friday, Italy had recalled its envoy in Delhi, Giacomo Sanfelice, for “consultations”, a time-honoured diplomatic gesture of displeasure.

The Indian envoy met the Italian Foreign Ministry's Director General, who conveyed his government's concern regarding the charges filed against the marines in custody. He assured Italy that he would communicate these concerns to the appropriate authorities.

The last time the Indian envoy was summoned on the issue of two marines killing two Indian unarmed fishermen off the coast of Kerala, it was to meet Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi.

On both occasions, Italy has maintained that India had no jurisdiction on the marines, because they were on an Italian ship by an Act of [Italian] Parliament, providing for vessel protection detachments (VPDs).

But India says VPDs don't have global sanctity in terms of international laws, and insists on the applicability of Indian laws.

Don't these stupid brainless italians understand the simple fact that the court in most countries is not under the authority of the government. Not only can the government do anything about it , but even if they tried , it would be political suicide. It's amazing how stupid they are thinking that calling the indian ambassador will get their sailors released. As if he has any control whatsoever over the court. If they have the least amount of sense , they should hire some strong lawyers and prepare a good defence for their sailors so that the penalty awarded to them can be limited to 3-4 years.

If the Italians can provide a good legal team for their defence, the marines will probably get off with a lighter sentence than what they would get in their home country - after all, Indian courts are very liberal in quantum of punishments. The death penalty has been awarded once in the last 14 years, and even first degree murderers get away with a few years imprisonment. So for a case like this, if they played their cards well, they could get off with a token sentence. Instead they are doing everything they can to antagonise India and the Indian legal system. I suspect they are digging their own graves with this attitude.
