Its not about freedom but woman healthcare and child mortality rate, in both this two Pak and BD did better than India. Yes India did better at women participating at work.

Urban India is totally different than rural India.

I don't think so. The index also covers how much education girls receive, their participation in the labour force, and how they are represented in government.

on a related note China is ranked 38, the highest in amongst developing countries. Say what you will about Mao and communism, it completely abolished traditional repression of women.

South Asia in particular, needs to adopt a lot of changes,as far as gender-free progress is concerned. There is huge illiterate population, a big burden, on South Asia, before this dream become a reality. In India, Urban areas have shown marked improvements since last two decades. Rural areas need to come up with any thing substantial, but they are catching up.
