It was that bad. Racism has always been the strychnine poison in the American well. It is still not completely leached out of our system but we have made tremendous progress. It was fundamental to the largest war we ever fought in our history and that was a hundred years before I was born and yet, when I was born, blacks were harshly segregated. Their most basic human rights and dignity violated. Their right to vote suppressed. I have mixed feelings about Affirmative Action although while I was in the military, they had their own version and it made us a much better fighting force because of it. These days, being a minority is a plus on a job application because Affirmative Action or not, virtually all companies are always promoting diversity in their work force. As to poverty, that is always the dilemma of the the first generations to come here and although almost all black families have been here for centuries, their problems regarding poverty and crime come from the collapse of black family structure. Whites have the same problem since the 1950's when divorce became easy, women having kids out of wedlock became common, and ideas about traditional family structure became challenged.

but gun ownership and bearing them, is a constitutional right that is held dear by the American people, including me. I am a conservative Republican and support the defence of those rights under our 2nd Amendment. America, because it cherishes individual freedom to the point of a bit of constant anarchy, will always have more violence than most other western democracies. We are the third largest country in the world; only China & India have more people, and we are tremendously diverse; racially, ethnically, culturally, religiously. Higher crime than in other developed countries is always going to be a fact of life in America, particularly in our cities. It's worth noting though that our violent crime rate has been falling steadily for decades now. The homicide rate was almost 3x worse when I graduated high school, than it is today and gun laws since then, have been getting more lax, not stricter.
