India is likely to Take Delivery of K-152 Nerpa by June 2010

India is likely to take delivery of a Russian nuclear-powered submarine, K-152 Nerpa, on a 10-year lease by June this year. The Akula-II class submarine, which India has sought for long, was inducted into the Russian Navy last December after delayed sea trials due to a mishap on board in 2008.India hopes to train its personnel on board the Russian submarine, to be rechristened INS Chakra, as its expects to operate an indigenously developed nuclear-powered vessel.

It had last July launched nuclear-powered INS Arihant, which is at present under construction in Visakhapatnam and is expected to join the fleet in about two years."The Nerpa is expected to join the Indian Navy by June.It could be inducted in April or May. But, yes, certainly by June," Navy sources said here today.

Akulas are definitely one of the best attack sub classes in the world (SSN).
Since India wants to build ballistic missile subs (SSBNs) it will need SSNs to guard SSBNs and take out enemy SSBNs (read Chinese ballistic missile subs).

Akulas are extremely quiet. Considered to be quieter than American Los Angeles class SSNs. Only the three Sea Wolf class SSNs and 6 Virginia class SSNS are quieter than the Akulas.

COMPARISON with CONVENTIONAL subs
They are also very fast underwater and can dive deeper than conventional subs.
For eg. - Pakistan's Agosta 90B can go a max of 12 kts submerged (that too for shot time) and has a max dive depth of 350m
Akula can run at 33 kts submerged for a long time (days) and has a dive depth of 600m.

Akulas can be deadly against surface warships/ships. India can use them to impose a blockade of Pak or interdict oil supplies to China

india is supposed to get one more of these on the lease...and after ten years lease there is an option to buy them....

god bless russia...:smitten:

and also we have the option to buy these monsters

we need more of these + our own Arihant in large numbers.

But this is aug and no sign it come to India:toast_sign:

Maybe they got the year wrong.

Rule of thumb. Things don't always run ontime every where I have been. This happens in America as well. But delays seems to hit India weapons procurement more severely.

We don't face serious threats,or threats that can't be handled by our current conventional military. So even if there are delays(ex Ghorshov) We don't feel uneasy about it.
