I think india has stockpiled enough conventional arsenal to defend itself effectively against china alone and threatening pakistan's sovereignity if it comes head to head with india alone.

Now this new idea of going at war with both china and pakistan is a plea to stockpile more armaments and to convince the world that the challenges faced by india are much more then what its prepared for.

Lets assume if the world accepts this indian notion and sells india whatever it desires then at a given time india may say that it has to prepare itself for WWIII, what then?

Its nonsense what Lt-General A S Lamba said, its not gonna happen.

India can't match China's military force: Navy Chief

New Delhi: Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta has set off a storm by saying India cannot match China military force. Is it a warning from India's military that the government needs to hear?


"In military terms, both conventional and non-conventional, we neither have the capability nor the intention to match China force for force," said Admiral Sureesh Mehta.

For a nuclear-armed military representing the interests of a billion-plus people, the lack of confidence is quite striking. India's military leadership has made a stunning confession that New Delhi doesn't have the stomach for a fight, if push came to shove on the disputed Sino-Indian boundary.

"Whether in terms of GDP, defence spend or any other parameter, the gap between the two is too wide to bridge and is getting wider by the day," he said.

Is Mehta expressing frustration at the slow pace of India's military modernisation? While India spends about $30 billion annually on defence, China spends at least thrice as much, although some estimates go up to $ 200 billion.

Its military is twice as large as India and its nuclear arsenal far well proven.

"The eco penalties resulting from military conflict would have grave consequences for both nations. It would therefore be in both our interests to cooperate with reach other," he said.

The question is, does China want nothing but cooperation with India, as Mehta would want? It continues to proliferate missile and nuclear technology to Pakistan. Its growing footprint in the Indian Ocean challenges India's pre-eminence.

Its presence in ports ranging from Sittwe in Myanmar to Hambantotta in Lanka and Gwadar in Pakistan suggests a plan for the strategic encirclement of India. The Navy Chief's dramatic statement may have been a desperate cry to counter the Dragon.

It's a good thing they are preparing for such scenarios (though i believe it won't happen) He shouldn'tve publicized this tho =) I agree he is overestimating India's capability

What will India do in such a situation. If there is a war between India and Pakistan, i'm absolutely sure that China won't be there to help Pakistan or make use of the situation. But on the other hand, if there is China-Ind war, then there will be situation where India has to do what the article says.

I think there is nothing wrong with the article.

It is no secret that Pak-China are very close, and if the Indian armed forces are preparing to counter both together it is a good thing.

Also the idea is not to attack first, but to attack in case India is attacked first. So it is good if they are proparing for such a scenario, coz anything cannot be left to chance and the amred forces need to be prepared for any eventuality, even though chances of war in near future are less.

In fact it is the responsibility of the armed forces to be prepared for such a thing beforehand, irrespective of whether such a two front war ever happens or not.
It deserves praise for the effort that will go into making sure that India, even if attacked from both the fronts can handle both the fronts simultaneously and win.
