India, Iran, Russia mull ways to take on Taliban

NEW DELHI: It's still part of conversations, but old partners, India, Iran and Russia, are dusting out an old mechanism to take on the Taliban in
Afghanistan.

All three countries are still at an exploratory stage, but some articulated realities and possibilities are spurring on these discussions. First, the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan is giving the Taliban and other Pakistan-sponsored jihadists a growing space. Second, a fear that the US and NATO, in their eagerness to craft out an exit strategy in Afghanistan, might fall for a Pakistan-assisted scheme to put some Taliban elements dressed up as "moderate" in charge of governing Afghanistan.

The first time this will be discussed more fully will be during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's ministerial meeting in Moscow on March 27. Both Iran and India will attend the SCO meet. Iran's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki was in Mazar-e-Sharif last weekend to meet officials from Afghanistan and Tajikistan. India has been much more quiet. But Russia, in its capacity as SCO chairman, is taking a more hands-on position.

It has indicated that Iran might be more comfortable working with Russia and India under the SCO rubric than the US-led effort. The US and Nato are organizing a "big tent" meeting in The Hague on March 31, also on Afghanistan.

Iran has a lot of clout inside Afghanistan due to its ethnic and religious connections with the ethnic Tajiks, Uzbeks and Hazaras. India has steadily built up a lot of equity with its relentless commitment in the developmental field.

Russia has recently entered the Afghanistan equation, and has reportedly allowed the US to transport weaponry through its territory to reach Afghanistan. Currently, the US uses Pakistan, which comes under regular Taliban fire. Interestingly, among the other possibilities, the US is also looking at using the India-built Zaranj-Delaram road from Chahbahar port to enter Afghanistan from Iran. Iran, therefore, is emerging as a key player yet again in the Afghan sweepstakes.

The tri-nation strategy is not yet clear, apart from the fact that the Taliban have to be roundly defeated. This time, there is no Northern Alliance that ensured the defeat of the Taliban in 2001. So for an alternate strategy to work, a different structure would have to be cobbled together.

What is not yet clear is whether there can be some kind of coordination between Afghanistan's neighbours and the Nato-US initiative. Nevertheless, the great game is now fully joined.

Well, NA was the main fighting force on the ground. Yes it's given that they were supported by USAF and special forces. But you can't deny that Taliban couln't be rooted out of Kabul and Kandahar without NA's help.

Well NATO has not yet given up Afghanistan! And I'm not sure if what Iran has planed there would be helpful. But I read something about India offering troops to join the effort, just a rumour?

India already has special forces in Afganistan and India also finished building highway from Kandahar to Iran's border i think, or is it Kabul to Kandahar. But I have to do some search on this.

Are you sure about the special forces? I can't find that.

Indian Special Forces Contingent Deployed To Serve In Afghanistan

India has sent a 75 men strong contingent of special Indo-Tibetan Border Police commandos to serve in Afghanistan where terrorist activities from Pakistan is seeing a marked rise for the past 18 months.

Earlier 'Press Trust Of India' had reported that at least 134 highly trained commandos would be dispatched in two batches. The first batch of 75, according to source, is said to have already left for Afghanistan. The second batch of around 50 commandos is expected to be sent in the first week of July 2007.

The troops will be deployed for protection of Indian Border Roads Organization personnel contracted for constructing crucial roadway links among major cities and regions in Afghanistan. This decision was taken by the Indian Govt. after it received an SOS from BRO engineers constructing the 218-km Zaranj-Delaram highway, a strategic road that will connect Kandahar to the Western regions of Afghanistan.

With the reinforcements, the total number of ITBP commandos in Afghanistan for protection of Indian workers will go up to 388 as 254 are already there for the task.

Okay by now I found some sources as well. Well I hope India will even up its contribution. More troops and aid are still needed very much! I mean India has a huge army right? So send 10.000 troops and NATO will be in your debt ;) But no Rambos maybe people that even speak one of the languages, if that is possible..

Why does India so eagerly prove their great power status?
Plz don't imitate America, or you will get in troubleness.
Menbai's attack is just a caution.

USA is ganster, does India want to be another ganster?

.
The US is not a gangster, they of course like everyone else make mistakes and primarily are pursuing national interests. But they are by far the most benevolent superpower of all the "options" available. I don't want to imagine what it would be like living under Russian rule or influence like many people from east Germany had to for so many years. Horrible totalitarianism is what awaits the world from the Russians and autocracy from the Chinese..

Keep in mind the US is not in Afghanistan or Iraq to take over these countries for good. Yes they want to secure access to the oil, but they will BUY IT, not steal it and they will hand the government over to the people.
Strategic interests are involved of course but the benefits will be on both sides.
See the country's that the USA has "beaten" in the past now all enjoy prosperity: Germany, Japan, Italy, South Korea etc...

Yes the US has many flaws. Yes the legitimation for the Iraq war was a lie and it lacked a post war strategy. Yes the Bush administration made many questionable choices. Yes US National Interests have cost many lives.
But that is something you can say about almost all nations which have or had power.

So the US certainly isn't perfect, far from it, but they are a bit closer than all the potentials for superpower right now.
And if they are a gangster, China is the mafia.

Gangster provake the war all over the world,
Have you ever find a mafia just sit in their own home to
develop theirself?

Totaly nonsense,

Whether any countries is Totalitarianism or not,
It's their own thing.

You can criticism him, but you cannot invade him.

If the dictator beltreat their people,
you can give a shelter to these people,
but you can not invade the country.

All Your western people's theory all learn from the robber.
coz, 100 years ago, all of you are robber and ganster.
