Bullet train will fare quiet good. India is like Europe. Bullet train will make fare cheaper, at the cost of slightly lengthy time. There are so many people in India, and poor people, so it's wise to have a system especially when it can be profitable. Bullet trains are very good replacement for air travel, if money is an issue.

Actually it is the opposite. Bullet trains will be more expensive because to develop their initial infrastructure, it would cost a bomb.

No one here would be able to pay Rs.5,000+ on a trip by default. Maybe short business sectors like Delhi-Jaipur but no way across India.

Definately not across India. They'll likely connect delhi first, or premium paying customers. India is bigger than Europe so obviously India won't be able to afford. But setting up key cities will do a great job.

Definitely. At least , if they do decide to build these, Indians of higher economic status will have the option of taking the rail system. I do seriously hope that the Indian government follows through.

Yes, bullet train is like having nukes. They can vastly increase trade.

Take train instead of airplane, 2 hours airport security check in etc, whereas train you can arrive 15 mins and hop in. Given the choice between air and train, I'll take train. Internet accesible, space enough, family rooms (defo for india), economy class, business class, sleeping rooms, onboard shops and so much more. It can create far more jobs.

Nonsense, I am not talking about shutting down industries, but about cooperation and learning new about new technologies which are already available and management and production related know how (something in which we suck incredibly hard.)

Indian Railway need not finance Bullet trains and even if they do decide on Bullet trains, they would need to create infrastructure from scratch as current infrastructure could not support trains running at 200+ Kmph speed. They could be developed Privately on the lines of Delhi Metro.And Since they would be competing with Airlines rather than Railways, they could be run on for profit basis.

Bullet trains are not restricted technology items. Their tech is for sale in open market hence there is no needed to reinvent wheel.

Learning about new technologies? I don't think the Japanese will transfer such critical technology. Any links? Any how, my question was, are we aggressively investing in this sector? Last time we had a discussion on railways on this forum it was learnt that even the electric traction motors (critical technology) that we use in our railway engines are imported. In my personal opinion bullet trains are not a pressing need for the masses as of today. We must introduce semi-high speed trains (160-200 km/ph) on important routes and invest heavily in bullet train technology so that by 2025 we're ready to roll out our own indigenous bullet trains. I find this (largely UPA) habit of throwing away precious foreign exchange at the drop of a hat rather unnerving when we have world class engineers/technicians.

That's why i am saying that it should be run on Delhi metro's model rather than Public owned Indian railways. It would be developed only if it turns out to be profitable.


China's bill is inflated due to technology chosen. China chose Maglev tech for it's fast speed trains which is costliest of all available options.

But why do we need to have HSR ? just because China has it!

Railways in India are mass movers and cheap option for the masses.They should make the Railways efficient instead of this High Speed bull crap.
