Infiltration bid foiled near Jammu: BSF

Jammu: The Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday claimed it had foiled an infiltration attempt after it exchanged gunfire with a group of militants trying to sneak into the Indian side in Jammu region.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of BSF JB Sangwan said that about three to four militants attempted to sneak into the Indian side from near Malarh border post in Ramgarh sector, about 30 km south of Jammu.

"The group fired at the patrol party of the BSF that led to retaliation from our side which continued for about half-an-hour. The intruders ran back into the Pakistani side thereafter," he said.

"The incident took place about two km beyond the barbed wire fencing so there is no question of fence getting damaged," Sangwan said.

The Indian side has erected barbed wire fencing along the 220 km International Border and 720 km Line of Control (LOC) with Pakistan as a deterrent against infiltration. This fence is about 500 meters to 2.5 km inside Indian territory.

The Bansantar river flows near the place where the infiltration bid happened. But Sangwan said there was remote possibility of infiltrators having crossed the river as it is very swollen due to rains.

Security forces including BSF, Army and police are conducting extensive searches and alert has been sounded on the Jammu-Pathankot highway, which is about 15 km from the IB here.

Rajkot Based on intelligence inputs, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday foiled an infiltration bid and arrested nine Pakistani nationals from the Kori Creek area in Kutch district. They were brought to the Joint Interrogation Centre at Bhuj on Monday.
Six of the arrested appear to be fishermen, preliminary investigation has revealed, while the other three entered Indian waters wilfully, the investigating agencies said. The BSF seized their boat, but no fishing equipment or marine catch was found in the vessel.

DIG (Intelligence) BSF Vishnu Dutt said: “We had an intelligence report regarding possible infiltration through the sea route. Based on this, vigilance was heightened, and on Sunday, our two patrolling boats apprehended this Pakistani vessel.”

He added that the Pakistani boat was seized 40 km inside Indian waters from the International Maritime Boundary.

BSF officers said that for fishing, this is an off-season, as the sea is rough. Intruders tried to take advantage of the rough weather conditions, they added.

“This case is different from the routine arrest of Pakistani fishermen. First, this is not the fishing season. Besides, at least three of them are not fishermen. But all of them are Pakistani nationals,” said Dutt.

BSF officers said a joint interrogation of all the nine arrested will be done by various agencies, including the local police, IB, Coastguard, BSF and the Navy at the Joint Interrogation Centre. A case has been registered with the Narayansarovar police station in this regard.

Incidentally, the terrorists who held Mumbai hostage for three days in November 2008 had arrived through the same Pakistan-Kutch-Maharashtra sea route.

Heroin seized at Indo-Pak Border

GURDASPUR,PUNJAB: Twenty five kilograms of heroin, worth Rs.1.25 billion, was seized by the Border Security Force (BSF) near the India-Pakistan

border in this district of Punjab Tuesday.

"We have seized 25 kilograms of heroin that is worth Rs.125 crore (Rs.1.25 billion) in the international market, in the wee hours Tuesday," Jagir Singh, Punjab frontier deputy inspector general, told IANS.

"Our jawans observed some suspicious movement near the border. When they went near that place, a miscreant left his bag and ran away on the other side of the border. Our officials chased him but could not catch him due to dense mist and very low visibility," he said.

Gurdaspur is around 250 km from state capital Chandigarh.

BSF is India's paramilitary force that guards the 553 km fenced border between India and Pakistan in Punjab.

"Our investigation is on and we are raiding various places to nab the accused," said Singh.

This is the third major breakthrough by the BSF in the last few days.

BSF personnel had recovered six kilograms of heroin, worth Rs.30 crore (Rs.300 million) in the international market, Monday, from across the fence in some paddy fields in Amritsar district. In this case also, the smugglers managed to escape, taking advantage of the darkness.

The BSF arrested four Pakistani smugglers Saturday and recovered two kilograms of heroin, a night vision device, arms and ammunition from their possession, while they were trying to cross the Khemkaran sector in the border district of Ferozepur.

Arms cache recovered from militant hideout in Poonch

An arms cache was recovered by the security forces from a militant hideout in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police sources said here today.

On specific information, security forces launched a search operation in Lohari Gali area of Mankote in border district of Poonch yesterday, they said.

The recoveries from the hideout included one AK rifle with two magazines and 190 rounds, one pistol with six rounds and six hand grenades, they said

Huge cache of arms recovered near LoC in J-K

Poonch (J-K), Aug 18 (PTI) Security forces today recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including one AK bullet action gun, from two militant hideouts near Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police sources said here.

A joint team of army and police busted a militant hideout in forest area of Balakote, about 60-kms from here, during a search operation, they said.

The recoveries from the hideout included one AK bullet action gun with 19 rounds, one AK-56 rifle with five magazines, four pistols with five rounds and four magazines, ten grenades, two wireless sets, 885 AK rounds and, one AK magazine, the sources said.

Security forces today busted another hideout in forest area of Patri, about 80-kms from here, in the district, they said. They later destroyed the hideouts.

SRINAGAR: Army claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid and killed two militants in Macchil sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district on

Sunday.

An Army spokesperson said the two were killed after troops spotted a group of heavily-armed terrorists trying to sneak into the Indian side. "The troops challenged them and asked them to surrender. But they fired at the patrol triggering a gunfight," he said. He said the encounter was on till the last reports came in.

Sources said two more militants are believed to be holed up in the area.
