India inks Rs 5,000 cr deal with US for 145 M777 howitzers

This is too expensive. May be Indian government is paying such high cost as it want to receive on priority bases.

As chinese intrusions are increasing, we woukd require such light weight 155mm howitzers to provide firesupport in case of any misadventures.
M777 are the lightest howitzer in its class, it can be lifted to position by chinooks easily.

Nope. It's for assembly lines and TOT as well. Same in line of Rafale. Even if we book 800 guns it will take same time to have support base for assembly. So why to pay them all in one go. ? Once assembly line is opened more orders can be placed minus Logistics expenses!!! And when order in bulk price goes further down. When manufacturing of small parts in India price further go down. 20-30 % will have to be reinvested. In form of parts production or in other forms.

Best deal?

I can agree with first part but about 2nd there is no mention of TOT. USA don't give with TOT.
First step out of 145 only 25 will be imported. Agree?

Second : Rest will be assembled in India. Agreed? 120 of them.

Thirdly : Deal is about 750 million dollars. In which 200 millions has to be reinvested due to offset clauses in all Indian defence deals. So during assembly stage small non critical technology parts, or technology of parts already available in India will be outsourced locally.

Lastly : Once we have set up a manufacturing base in India. Starts assembly of Howitzers with some part made in India due to offset clause. We will be in a very good position to get even better deal to make more equipments in locally as next order could be bulk.

what about ammunition do they get TOT for smart munitions also ??

M777 155mm Howitzer weighing less than 10000 lbs (4218 kg).

India gears up to import the M777 Howitzers or the Ultra-Light Howitzers (ULHs) produced by the US based BAE Systems under the reported $750 million deal, a strong price competition is brewing back home–with the Kalyani group led by Baba Kalyani all set to offer similar ULHs at a significantly lower price than the imported price of a ULH.

Bharat Ultra-Light Howitzer has been developed using light weight exotic materials like Titanium and Aluminium based alloys. The company also has a system ready for testing before the end of this year.

BAE Systems has already announced a tie up with Mahindra as its business partner for its proposed in-country assembly, integration and test (AIT) facility for the M777 Howitzer. The gun will come with laser inertial artillery pointing systems (LINAPS), maintenance, personnel training and training equipment, technical assistance, engineering and logistics support services.

India and the US today inked a nearly Rs 5,000 crore deal for 145 M777 ultra-light howitzers, which will be mostly deployed near the borders with China.

Don't worry Mahindra is doing the job & not those Lazy Slobs at OFB
So true. I hope they hand over the production of Tejas, Dhanush, Indigenous missiles and maybe even the indigenous assault rifles like Excalibur & MCIWS to private Indian defense firms to improve the rate of production and also better quality products with high precision and less tolerance limits. In fact, GOI should privatize the OFBs and Gun Carriage Factories.

Ultra Light Howitzers

Under the terms of the Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) signed with the US Government for supply of 145 ULH, 25 guns will be inducted in Fully Formed condition and the balance 120 guns will be assembled in India. Government has placed an indent on Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) for procurement of Qty. 114 155-MM Dhanush artillery guns.

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for procurement of integrated Tracked Self Propelled (SP) 155mm artillery guns on 26.02.2008.

This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre in a written reply to Shri B Senguttuvan in Lok Sabha today.

yes actually , its known fact that during Kargil they desperately needed ammunition so with this purchase are they looking for ammunition also ?
It's an ultra costly thing, not for everyday use. Of course it will be come with this deal, after all US is ready to sell anything to India for containing the Chinese, but don't expect TOT. We should start in-house development for desi Excalibur for our daily use in LOC.
