What's new

India imposes Self Arms-Embargo, bans imports of 101 defence systems/platforms

Instead of going through this tamasha, government should take concrete steps to privatize the DPSUs & OFBs followed up by concrete orders to Indian private entities.
DPSUs have been in existence for quite a while now and it isn't easy dismantling or privatizing em given their large workforce who're protesting against privatization. Of course when a corporate company takes over, these sloth heads can't laze all day anymore and their chai-biscut culture will go down the drain. Also, most of em are actually incompetent and are either hired on caste reservation basis or favoritism. No wonder we've been seeing protests all over. But if NDA stays in power, privatization should be possible by their next term

India will still continue to import MMRCA fighters, Submarines, Predator drones, MH-60R choppers
  • There is no Indian alternate available to MMRCA. We can't fulfill the role of a medium weight fighter with a light or heavy weight class. Secondly, I doubt we'd procure anymore Rafales, we already rejected American fighters like F-16/F-18 and the Gripen as well since it's in the same class as the Tejas.
  • Submarines: Recent submarine projects are being built in our local shipyards unlike others who're procuring off the shelf. That gave us enough expertise to design and build Arihant Class Nuclear subs.
  • The news about IAF & IN acquiring predator and guardian drones have been doing circles for a while now but nothing concrete
  • MH-60R helos...we don't have any local alternative of this class with sub-hunting capabilities. Since HAL is developing the medium lift chopper, they can develop a naval variant with sub-hunting capability

The ones on the banned list are the items which India anyway plans to buy like LCA, LCH, Brahmos etc.

This is more of a political stunt than anything else.

India will still continue to import MMRCA fighters, Submarines, Predator drones, MH-60R choppers etc. as planned.

If this is a political stunt and not enforced then that sounds stupid and irresponsible. Unless its also relayed that this list is to be ignored, this can only add further confusion and delays to an already messy procurement setup.

My point was that this is Modi's 2nd term. He needs to deliver on DPSU & OFB privatization.

That is what some of the other analysts have mentioned. Many of the items on the list are already produced domestically.

Actually they have taken the current items that are being produced and procured locally and added them to this list.

Old wine in new bottle eh?

The list confirms what can be made in India today.

The list also shows which indigenous projects have failed and hence did not make it the list.

Unfortunately it does not provide a strategy and policy on how more new items will be made in India.

In next 3 year they will come up with new slogans and new list for their lack of orders to private sector
