India hopes to fly indigenous 90-seater aircraft in five years

NEW DELHI: India hopes to test fly its first indigenously-developed 90 seater regional transport aircraft in the next five years, a top official has said.

The 90-seater RTA will be developed as a team India initiative led by CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL), which could also see some global participation, CSIR Director General Samir Brahmachari said here today.

A committee headed by former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair submitted a feasibility study to Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) recently in this regard.

The Committee, which had top bureaucrats and aerospace scientists as members, has suggested a two-pronged approach -- Design Development and Production Unit -- to realise the objective.

"The Committee has come to a conclusion that the RTA should be a narrow body turbo fan aircraft with a seating capacity for 70-90 persons and stretchable to 80-100 persons," Brahmachari said.

The total project cost is estimated at Rs 7,700 crore -- Rs 4,500 for the design and development stage and Rs 3,200 for the production unit, he said.

The Nair Committee has also suggested that the government pick up the entire tab for the design and development state and has favoured a joint venture route for setting up the production facility.

The panel has set a target of six-eight years for completion of the development and production stage of the project.

"We hope to have the prototype ready in the next five years assuming that the project takes off in 2012," Brahmachari said.

If C-17 is related to defence then consider this as a baby step towards a C-17 in 2 to 3 decades.

Buddy,C17 Globmaster III is currently the best heavy duty military cargo carrier in the world. So it is very well related to defence. But this thing is not even ready, leave alone to become a C 17.By your logic,if it becomes a cargo carrier 3 decades later,so it should be discussed here after 3 decades.Currently it has no place here.
REGARDS....

Well thats quite true, because Indian civil aviation industry is all screwed up by foreign market, if something is beniifited by Indian R&D its the military, better to concentrate on it rather than try to steal the civilian market from Foreign vendors...

Looks and sounds good.

I suppose the NCA is for commercial purposes.

Apparently, China's Y-20 will start its maiden flight next year.

Good to see Asian aerospace industries developing fast  At some point in the future, I am certain that we won't need any Western made aircraft :D

Waiting for that day sir, when Asia would be be self sufficient enough, It will be out of the clutches of west and there would be peace an harmony here, untill then we are there puppets as always.

Excellent work India! Don't forget to add a little more cabin room for the passengers that enter last in the plane just to find out that there are no more space for their carry on luggage.:)

Oops, that's what I meant, the overhead cabin spaces. Have you seen the prices most domestic airlines charges per luggage lately? It's like $15 -$15 depending on the airline company, besides Southwest.
