Pakistan and China had on Sunday talked about the Kashmir issue. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Pakistan amidst fresh Indo-Pak tensions.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
New Delhi: In a strong rebuttal, India on Tuesday hit back at China and Pakistan for reference to Jammu and Kashmir in the joint statement issued at the conclusion of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's two-day visit to Islamabad. "Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India," said the Ministry of External Affairs.
"We reject the reference to Jammu and Kashmir in the joint statement issued by China and Pakistan after the recent visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister. Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said while addressing a press conference.
The MEA further expressed concerns over the 'China Pakistan Economic Corridor' project.
"On the other hand, India has consistently expressed concerns to both China and Pakistan on the projects in so-called 'China Pakistan Economic Corridor', which is in the territory of India that has been illegally occupied by Pakistan since 1947."
He added that the parties concerned should cease such actions.
"India is resolutely opposed to any actions by other countries to change the status quo in Pakistan-occupied J&K. We call on the parties concerned to cease such actions," said Kumar.
As per the joint statement, China had reaffirmed its support for Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. During his visit to Islamabad, Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councillor Wang Yi met Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, President Arif Alvi, his counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and the Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
Wang's visit to Pakistan took place amidst fresh tensions between India and Pakistan following the abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
The visiting delegation said that China was keeping a watch on the current situation in Kashmir and asserted that the issue was a "dispute left from history".
"The Chinese side reaffirmed its support for Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence, and national dignity, in choosing its development path in light of its national conditions, in working for a better external security environment, and in playing a more constructive role in regional and international issues," the statement said.
"Parties need to settle disputes and issues in the region through dialogue on the basis of mutual respect and equality," it added.
India has constantly told the global community that the abrogation of Article 370 was an internal matter of the country.
