SLAMABAD: Pakistan has assessed that India has enough fissile material for more than 2,000 warheads, a media report said on Thursday.

The National Command Authority (NCA) on Wednesday concluded that India's growing nuclear programme and absence of a conflict resolution mechanism were upsetting strategic stability in the region and the situation was forcing Pakistan to maintain 'full-spectrum deterrence capability', reported Dawn.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the apex policy-making body for the country's strategic programme reviewed in its meeting the regional security environment and was briefed on fast-paced strategic and conventional capability developments taking place in the neighbourhood.

The media report said that contrary to international estimates, Pakistani assessment is that India has enough fissile material, both reactor and weapon-grade plutonium, for more than 2,000 warheads.

International Institute of Strategic Studies noted in a paper: "New Delhi's plutonium stocks also continue to pile up; according to one Pakistani assessment, by the end of 2013 India had produced enough weapons and reactor-grade plutonium (0.8-1tn and 15tn respectively) for 2,000 warheads."

The meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman General Rashad Mehmood, the three services chiefs and the director general of the strategic plans division.

Some sort of fake number calculation to provide legit excuse to ramp up Pakistan's own production I guess.

I'd be more worried about India's total tritium production.

And are the Pakistanis saying we would have to turn all our reactor grade Plutonium into weapons grade to get to the 2000 warhead number? Because doing that takes lots of time and money yo.....at negligible increase in deterrence given the tritium factor already in play and size and number of Pakistani targets.

Why??? Why again such mentality of conspiracy? 2000 makes no sense whatsoever.

India is working upon Thorium Cycle based nuclear power.
Any knowledgeable person knows that Unlike uranium, natural thorium contains no fissile isotopes. Hence fissile material like U232, U235 or plutonium has to be added.

Since India didnt had ample amount of fissile material available to bootstrap the Thorium Cycle Nuclear Power a 3 stage strategy was developed for generating thorium nuclear power. In stage one we created PHWR which after generating power provided us with U238 which can be converted in a reactor to the fissile isotope P239. In stage two use FBR reactors for power generation which uses MOX fuel made of P239 and U238. In FBRs, P239 undergoes fission to produce energy, while the U238 present in the mixed oxide fuel transmutes to additional P239. Thus, the Stage II FBRs are designed to "breed" more fuel than they consume. Once the inventory of P239 is built up thorium can be introduced as a blanket material in the reactor and transmuted to U233 for use in the third stage.

I hope this helps in understanding why India is building up stock piles of plutonium or to be specific P239.

Actually this news might be true to some extent. I have read a report sometime back(can't find the link now), that India actually has enough fissile material for raising world's 3rd largest stockpile of nuclear bombs around 5000. It was a report regarding number of nuclear reactors outside the IAEA watch, their number of operational years and capacity to produce fissile material per year. The final estimate was that India already has enough fissile material for around 5000 nukes. Entire world has this estimate but no one ever raised any issue because they know the track record of india's non proliferation and its priorities. But most of the fissile material is not utilized for nukes. India's current stockpile is of 110-120 nukes only and India is no longer interested in increasing the number of nukes and has almost capped it around the already developed stockpile of nukes.

India might have a large stockpile of fissile material but is not at all interested in increasing the number of nukes in its arsenal. No sane country will initiate a nuclear attack no matter what is at stake(unlike some countries who got suicidal tendencies).

Changing the reactor grade material to weapons grade material will immediately ring a lot of alarm bells worldwide. There is no way India can disguise such an undertaking....especially if we start pulling material from IAEA safeguard reactors.

There is a reason why warhead numbers for India have constantly been around the 100 - 120 mark...because we have pretty much capped production of weapons grade plutonium here while tritium is ramped up to produce the 200kt H-bombs using the plutonium primaries from the generation 1 fission bombs and replacing them on 1 - 1 basis...all the while increasing the total yield of our arsenal by a magnitude or so.

Only after the full conversion is complete would I assume we would then increase to a higher number of total warheads....depending on the geopolitical situation at that point.....and may need 1 or 2 more rounds of final testing at that point to prove one last larger megaton-range design if India feels the need for it.

Raw fissile material calculations are meaningless given the difference between reactor and weapons grade material in enrichment.

Number of warheads are just speculation, we have never disclosed the number of warheads that we have.

They do indeed have a lot of fissile material. That is why we should stick to our Minimum Deterrence strategy.

Lol.. true we have enouh fissile material to make more than 5000 nukes... i am very much sure of it... if pakistan need to counter India it must need to increase it's stockpile and nuke manufacturing capacity to atleast 200 a year... its obvious if pakistan want to safe from hindu bomb tgen it must produce islamic bomb(what color will you paint it to, i guess green.)
Faster you produce nuke the safer you are or India is coming.. and pakistan won't stand a chance with our 5000 nukes..
