India has expressed interest in strengthening Afghan army: US

Oct 29, 2011,

WASHINGTON: Praising India's "constructive" role in the reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, the Pentagon in a report told the US Congress that New Delhi has now expressed an interest to help strengthen the capabilities of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

"In addition to reconstruction projects, India has expressed an interest to help strengthen the capabilities of the ANSF," Pentagon said in its six-monthly progress report on Afghanistan.

"During his June 2011 visit to New Delhi, Afghan Defence Minister Wardak and Indian Defence Minister A K Antony discussed expanding cooperation to train ANSF personnel.

"To date, India's security assistance has been limited; India currently provides scholarships for Afghan National Security Force personnel to study in India, and the Indian Government is also exploring options to train female Afghan police in India," the report said.

The Pentagon said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs' visit to Kabul in May 2011, his first since 2005, underscored India's enduring commitment to diplomatic and development efforts in Afghanistan. During his visit, Singh announced an increase in economic support to the war-torn country to a joint session of the Afghan Parliament.

. . .
IMO Train Afghan Army extensively. But we should never ever send our military there, except for some security forces
for the infra projects.Overall, a good news.

yes this is a big thing to consider in our doctrine with Afghanistan every country that has gone into Afghanistan has had to escape with its tail up its a$$ we should not fight anyone elses war we made that mistake in Sri Lanka and sacrificed 1,000 of our men to fight the Tamils who we had once covertly supported

.
I've to give it to the Pakistanis - they were right all along, their policies have finally compelled India to explore its options in Afghanistan! :)

I think present doctrine is excellent. The aim should not be to sandwich Pakistan but to strengthen Afghanistan to take its own decision without any influence from outside.

On the contrary, I strongly believe that we should have some token presence there in A'stan. It will be great in giving the Pakistanis some goosebumps.

Bro, of whatever i have learnt about Afghanistan is that they hate any foreign troops presence and meddling in their affairs.
India is their favorite country because of the very doctrine we have adopted of infrastructure buildup and education sector which garners us their respect.

Pakistan is already having goosebumps from USA and NATO, why should we risk our troops. Besides Afghanistan in present scenario will not ask for it in fear of irking Pakistan. So, i beleive present policy is correct. Trust me USA is not going anytime soon after 2014.

God willing if this country stabilizes then majority of our headache is gone..then pakistan has to place all its soilders on its western border and we can give our full concentration on the chinese borders..as it is a fact that who so ever trains afghan army they will never forgive pakistan for the attrocities the pakistanis have commited on the afghan populace

.
^^ even if afghan stabilizes PAK wont need to place all its soldiers on western border.

however you are right that our headache will be not as much high as it is now.

my guess is PAK will have to keep 1/4 of its army on western border.

No brother..Even if Afghanistan stabilizes under taliban, if taliban is powerful enough to raise a professional military then too they will fight with pakistan, be it a civilian afghan or a taliban afghan they have always been used and sacrificied for pakistans interest and they know it, but with taliban the problem is they are a threat to india too as they have poisioned them selves with cult religious theories.
