Most likely, the British simply pretend nothing happened. As you said, it is their old tricks. From another point of view, it is a good that they can only do such trivial things to satisfy their ego today.

How do the athletes know. Many of the athletes may be meeting each other for the first time in London at the time of march past. May be they are thinking she is an athlete herself.
