India finds route to Kabul via Pakistani seaports

other than that, based on what I am reading - hindustany goods will not be allowed to travel through our country therefore you can use alternate avenues such as Chah Bahar (if the Americans allow you) in Iran.

I hope you realize that the USA is using Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan for supplying goods via Russia to Afghanistan and as such there is very little that the USA can do to India using Chahbahar for goods meant for Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

Wake up and smell the Coffee - Turkmenistan supplies Iran - yes indeed Iran - Billions of Cubic Feet of Natural Gas and the USA can do Diddly Squat.

Similarly with India using Chahbahar.

Kapish?

This is a really bad move and I hope the army interferes and stops this madness.

What is this going to result in? RAW/GoI sending weapons to TTP/BLA more easily than before? GoP just shot itself in the foot.

No Indian goods to be allowed to Afghanistan through Pakistan: Kaira

ISLAMABAD, Jul 20 (APP): Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Tuesday said that under the Pak-Afghan transit trade arrangement, only transport of trade goods from Afghanistan would be allowed and that too up to Wagah border only while no Indian goods would be transported to Afghanistan through this route. While addressing a press conference at the Prime Minister Secretariat here, he said that only a Letter of Understanding has been signed for this purpose so far.

“Confusion is prevailing from the very first day in this regard and reports, editorials and special reports contrary to the facts and against the interests of the country are being published,” said the minister.
“The Letter of Understanding has been signed for one way transit trade facility for Afghan goods up to Wagah border, and not for reverse trade from India. This would be a bilateral agreement under which Pakistan would allow Afghan goods export to India via Wagah border and Kabul will provide transit facility to Pakistani goods to Central Asians States (CARs),” he said.
Kaira said that it was regrettable that despite the fact that even though the government made it very clear right at the outset that the transit facility would only be for Afghan goods, now on the third day of the news, a section of press has carried editorial comments and special reports on the assumption that Indian trade though Pakistan would be against our interests.
To a question, he said that Pakistan Customs would evaluate the Afghan goods at the Torkham border, seal the containers and issue bank bonds which would only be returned after the goods are handed over to India at Wagah border.
He also made it clear that only a letter of understanding in this regard has been signed till now and an MoU would be signed only after approval of the cabinet after which it would become a bilateral agreement, but it has been decided that no Indian goods would be allowed to be imported from India through this route.
Further elaborating, Kaira said under this arrangement, Pakistan would benefit more because in Afghanistan there is no industrial set up, while our goods being exported to CARs by air cargo or by sea route would become more competitive by transit trade through Afghan land route.
He added that Afghanistan is also using Pakistani seas to export goods to India so it is not a new phenomenon.
To a question, the minister said the federal government has the authority to sign bilateral agreement with any country.
However, he said the government has taken into confidence PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sharif and other stockholders on the issue.
He said that Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani had talked to the Chief of PML-N and discussed various issues including Pakistan-Afghanistan transit trade and Pak-US strategic dialogue.
He said that he himself and Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim had already clarified the issue and even issued a press release to explain the factual situation but even after that the negative comments continued.
While responding to a query over the reservations of transporters, the minister said that the government would take the transporters into confidence on the issue. He opined that by transit trade through Afghanistan and Pakistani transporters would greatly benefit.
Kaira said that Pakistan also desires to enhance its trade with neighboring India but before that it was necessary to settle outstanding issues including Kashmir.

Missed this. Sounds good then.

And what does afghanistan plan to export to india and which it does not like to export to rest of the world?

Again... .what minister is saying just a soothing attempt and i doubt it is the true picture!

why parliament was not taken into confidence.... i remember in past such attempts had been rejected by parliament.... what was the compelling reason to go against the national?

I think India should offer Pak land transit to Nepal and BD in exchange for the land route to Afghanistan. We cannot keep asking for land access to Afghanistan without offering the same ourselves to Pak.

1-That's the basic problem Pakistan has been asking from long for access to Nepal, Bhutan and BD but India denied and here it is asking herself for transit and is granted by our stupid government.

2-Also, India is a major exporter for products worldwide and it has its products reaching to central Asia as well and at the same time we are suffering from low exports and it was a great opportunity for Pk to look for exports through Afghanistan to central Asian corridor, where India was already present but this grant has made it more easier for Indian products to reach there. Hence it will bring more competition for Pakistani products, it was an opportunity which Pakistan could enjoy and take advantage of.

Its against our strategic interest the route from India to Central Asia is now sea and land(cheap), and without this grant it would have been only Air (the expensive one).

So its a strategic loose loose for Pakistan.:hitwall:

India finds route to Kabul via Pakistani seaports
By Shahbaz Rana
July 20, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has allowed India to sell its products to Afghanistan and up to Central Asia via Pakistani seaports, reveals the commerce secretary. But experts fear that the decision may allow New Delhi to outpace Islamabad in its industrial exports to Kabul, which is a gateway to the land-locked Central Asia.

Its a great move by Pakistan to help a war ridden country! It is also an added bonus that we can now reach central Asia through this route!!

Please ask your government to do so ASP, we dont want to let India pass even Gold through our route what to say about garbage.

You don't have any control what passes through. Remote control is with USA. All you have to do is provide easy and secured passage even if it is garbage.

.
hopefully this is also a misunderstanding by the media......because this wont go down well among Pakistani peoples; its a reckless policy that only will help our enemy

I guess than we should cancel our deal with China for the two nuclear reactors and gas pipeline with Iran  since Uncle Sam holds the remote for Pakistan. I am simply amazed how brainwashed my Indian friends are, simply appalling

Nuclear deal and Pipeline is just noise making for domestic audience.

Nothing is going to happen unless USA nods head. Does not matter how many agreements are signed.

.
Kid, you don't know what you're talking about. You do know about North Waziristan operation (or the lack of it) and how much US pushed us for it? Nuclear deal and pipeline for domestic audience? Your best choice is to discuss that with elementary school kids as you have no idea what you're talking about.

But sure, US has some pressure over Pakistan, but not for everything.

:))))) US does not have remote control for refraining attacks on Indian goods neither we have.

So better keep the one US or you have save for nothing

No agreement over transit trade with Afghanistan yet: Pak Commerce Ministry
2010-07-21 13:30:00

Pakistan's Commerce Ministry has rejected media reports regarding the country signing a trade agreement with Afghanistan.

A statement issued by the ministry said that reports regarding the Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA) being signed were 'baseless' and contrary to the facts.

"Some of these reports are not based on facts and are causing unnecessary confusion and misgivings in the mind of the public. The Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement has not been signed between the two countries yet," The Daily Times quoted the statement, as saying.

"The Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement would be drafted in due course and signed by both sides after completing the respective procedural and legal formalities," it added.

It may be noted that reports in the Pakistani media had flashed Federal Minister for Trade Makhdoom Amin Fahim's quotes that Islamabad has signed a deal with Afghanistan under which goods from Afghanistan would be transported to India via Pakistan, but there was no option of a vice-versa movement.

Fahim was also quoted as saying that talks were underway to strike a similar understanding with India also. (ANI)
