Police in India's Bihar state have arrested three men posing as doctors, who performed botched sterilisation surgery on 53 women in two hours.

The tubectomy operations were carried out in a field and without the use of anaesthesia, in Araria district.

The three suspects were arrested on suspicion of "conducting unauthorised and illegal operations", police said.

Some of the women suffered complications as a result of the surgery and were taken to hospital.

The district police chief Shivdeep Lande told the BBC the suspects had been identified as Gopal Jha, Prakash Jha and Ramanand Jha.

He said the operations were organised by a group called the Jai Ambe Welfare Society.

"The Jai Ambe Welfare Society has been regularly organising family planning camps in Bihar, putting lives of innocent women in danger," he said.

"When I reached the spot I was surprised to find that not a single qualified doctor was present there and even the saline bottles used for the surgery were well past their expiry dates," Chief Lande said.

Reports in the local media said the group had promised poor village women 600 rupees ($9; £7.50) and free medicines if they came for family planning operations, although it is unclear why.

There is a huge in the quality of health care in India for rich and poor. In some places people do not have any access to health facilities and in others you have western style hospitals. I guess this goes against the ideals of a country that had chosen socialism upon its founding. 65 years later and still they are no more closer to universal health care and access.

And sterilization has a dark history in India: Compulsory sterilization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albeit not exclusive to India, it never the less exposes the underbelly of a society where people will risk their lives for a few Bucks.

Quacks are a problem in India.

Those bastards who do not know the salt of Paracetamol are doing General surgeries in backward, remote, semi urban, slums. There was a scam busted last year were in a reputed hospitals in a city, quacks were allowed to work for many years without degrees. The situation was even bad 10-20 years back but now there are stricter laws and quacks have been caught quite frequently.

Do they still exist?

Yes they do. Above news proves it.

The problem here is awareness, I have simple ideology 'Stop treating your doctor like a god when he is treating your like a customer'.

So asking his experience and qualification should be the first thing while interaction, rather telling him about your sickness.

To catch a 'Jholachaap' doctor is not a difficult thing but lack of education makes their business run for ages. They will prevail as long as we are not aware of our rights.

the fake doctors are tough to find especially, if his patients have no complaints!. I've read about a person, a Medical student( fnal year drop out) who practised as a doctor all of his life until he was caught. in fact, he practised almost 30 years in hospitals. btw, it was in circa 90s I read this report.

in poor states like Bengal,Bihar,UP,Orissa, jharkhand fake doctors are still common.

as a first step, online verification facility and access to doctor's data from Medical Universities must be made mandatory.

offtopic: some physiotherapists adds 'doctor' prefix. GoI has termed this illegal and punishable.
