India eyes C-17 jets

Sunday, January 10, 2010
NEW YORK: The Boeing Company said on Friday that India has contacted the US government about a potential purchase of 10 C-17 military transport aircraft.

“The US government has received a letter of request from India’s Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Indian Air Force regarding the potential acquisition of 10 C-17 Globemaster III advanced air lifters,” the company said in a statement.

“Boeing is very pleased that the Indian government has expressed interest in acquiring the C-17 to modernise its airlift capabilities, and we look forward to working closely with them,” said Vivek Lall, vice president and India country head of Boeing Defence, Space & Security.

Lall said that the C-17 “can fulfill India’s needs for military and humanitarian airlift to help it meet its growing domestic and international responsibilities.”

The C-17 Globemaster III advanced air lifter can carry large combat equipment and troops or humanitarian aid across international distances to small airfields anywhere in the world, according to the Chicago-headquartered company.

“The Indian Air Force wants to replace and augment its fleet of Russian-made AN-32 and IL-76 air lifters,” it said.

On Wednesday, Boeing announced it had won a contract from the United Arab Emirates for six C-17 military aircraft, making the UAE the second Middle East nation to order the air lifter, after Qatar.

The financial details of the UAE order were not disclosed. Boeing does not publish the cost of a C-17, which can vary according to specifications. According to the US Air Force website, however, each unit costs 202.3 million dollars.

Pay load capacity of the Globemaster is impressive , indeed but ,
A400M could be , a ideal mid sized solution to our agcing transporation needs

The troop size is almost identical , but the over all weight bearing capacity of the Globemaster is 4x that of A400M

Flight range of A400M is superior as it can go maximum 6,300 km with out refueling meaing it can ho to all major areas in world almost
that are of interest ...and uses less fuel as well

Not to mention cheaper then the Globemaster

GLOBEMASTER IS ideal for PAY LOAD capacity , but if you are just looking to upgrade old C130 to newer platform , with out excess need of world domination then go for Globemaster

vs the C130 cockpit ... all dials and analog stuff - clutter

Transport units are back bone to a military operation , even if you win one battle unless youc an back up your troops , with supplies and equipment in time, you can't win the over all war - sorta speak

The most recent example is the constant pain Pakistani army has to go thru to move troops from east of border to west and back again , I can image it must be an expensive pratice to move all the vehicles, troops and weapons from one side of broder to another...

I do feel Pakistan need to bring in fresh , 10-14 Transport planes
so we can move 3,000 troops easily if needed per hour to any loation in Pakistan

Not to mentionthese units can also serve as Movable Hospitals , in case of earth quackes and other natural desasters and these planes are rugged enough to land on dirt airports

Perhaps, You wont Ask the same question regarding F16 Acquisition fromthe SAME US and Adding the fact that India have Much Larger Borders and Two ( presumably ) Hostile Entities to Defend.

One of them -- the sale of 10 C-17s to India -- could help the line stay open an additional year. In a complicated process, India's purchase request must first pass muster with the State Department and Congress.

India's interest in the C-17, first revealed last year, is a potential game changer because it showed that there was a robust international market for the plane, analysts said.

"We now have proof that there's substantial interest out there," said Loren Thompson, a defense policy analyst with the Lexington Institute. "With careful marketing and a little bit of time, the international market for the C-17 could double or triple."

Boeing has sold the aircraft to foreign governments in the past, but mostly to close allies and in small batches. Britain, Australia, Canada and Qatar have C-17s in their fleets. And workers at the Long Beach plant will fill the United Arab Emirates' order for six planes by 2012.

But because these orders are small -- about five planes at a time -- they have not been enough to sustain the production line, Boeing said. The company has relied on the Air Force to extend its orders every year since 2006. The C-17 program accounts for about 14,000 jobs in California.

New orders, like the one India is proposing, could help shift the program's reliance away from the U.S. government.
