India enjoys advantage of democracy over China as global trade juggernaut: Export official

India-Europe corridor not only about trade, also about digitalization, energy security, says Federation of Indian Export Organizations chief

GREATER NOIDA, India
While China possesses an export ecosystem, India as a democracy is better positioned as an exporter to Europe, according to the head of India's top export promotion organization.

"From a democratic perspective, it's always better to deal with a country where we have the rules of the law," Ajay Sahai told Anadolu during the UP International Trade Show in the northern Indian city Greater Noida.

"With the change of the profile of exports, probably Europe will have much reliance on India," said Sahai, the director general and CEO of the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO).

Underlining that it is always "good to deal with a democratic country," Sahai said India was able to assure businesses "independent organizations" in the long run despite "initial hiccups."

Since the coronavirus pandemic erupted in late 2019, the Western world, especially Europe, began looking for new suppliers because of the deterioration in supply chains mostly related to China.
India is one of the candidates, especially in leather, textiles, jewelry, food, electronics, and automotive, said Sahai.

"Luckily for us, we're making inroads into all fields, we have rolled out a production incentive scheme for all the sectors for investments," he said.

Sahai said the country has begun to bear the fruits of its works, noting that technology giant Apple is building "its biggest plant in India."

"We were a net importer of mobile today," he added.

India may not roll out a kind of red carpet as other nations do, but it is home to the greatest profitability compared to anywhere else, asserted Sahai, adding:

"We're developing an evolving ecosystem and we're focusing more on ease of doing business."

India-Europe corridor
Besides trade goals, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) will also be important for digital transformation, digital connectivity, energy, and food security.

"The corridor is not only about the trade, we are talking about the distant corridor and about the energy security corridor," said Sahai.

Providing a new route for trade to Europe, the IMEC will save time by 40% and cost by 30% compared to the currently used Suez Canal.

The IMEC was unveiled at the G-20 summit earlier this month in India with a memorandum of understanding between India, the US, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, and the EU. The plan is to connect India and Europe via the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, and Greece.

"More important is the digital corridor, because we require very secure data transmission and that's why the corridor becomes very important," said Sahai.

"The world is moving toward energy security and therefore for energy transmission, the corridor will also be used. So I'm not just looking at the corridor from the great part of that, that is one of them. But probably more important would be for the digital transformation and for the digital connectivity and for the energy and food security," he said.

Democracy is a good idea in theory but difficult in practice. We are seeing that even in mature democracies like U.K. and U.S. Brexit was a democratic decision to embrace poverty. Trump's election was a democratic decision to choose chaos. For a developing country, businesses know democracy implies chaos. That is why importers like the stability of non-democracies like China and Vietnam over India. China would have been ungovernable if it were a democracy instead of being a success story it is now. I bet if a poll is held a majority of Chinese would choose to have more money in their pockets than 'democracy'. Probably a single digit percent of Chinese feel sad that they are not voting for their government. Rest of them are busy figuring how to earn money and enjoy life.

India is enjoying the advantage of being weak country. Which is the only reason why gets support from USA. Of course democracy is part of reason of being weak. So he is not totally wrong.

I don't think democracy equals weakness. U.K., U.S., France, Germany are all strong and democratic. But democracy implies chaos and that may hurt development. For example, in Pakistan. they had 'democracy ' last year and it was a mess with change in government, agitation and chaos. Now, with the new government, they have some stability. If they return back to 'democracy', the chaos will start again. If they want economic recovery, they should suspend electoral politics and run a national government focused on economic development for at least five years. Follow the China (and not India) model in this instance.

US, UK, Germany being developed has nothing to do with democracy. The west developed earlier because Europeans were lucky enough to develop scientific way of thinking when there was no democracy in Europe. Japan, S.Korea, China, none of non-west countries developed because of democray. In fact, democracy has never stopped hurting US, UK, Germany.

USA never supported PRC. It just allowed China to do business with west camp since 1979. Can you say doing business is a favor instead of double wins? Let alone US never gave up technologies and equipment sanctions to China. China can not buy most sophisticated machines from west world(not only US). You think China can not buy EUV lithography machine after trade war? No. China could not buy it since it was invented.

US was Japan's major oil, steel and other war materials supplier when Japanese Empire invaded China. Hitler was also funded by Wall Street.

True; democracy may hinder development. Especially in locales where it is not natural and hence has to be learnt at great pain and suffering. Based on the past 75 years of history, one has to accept, by the sheer power of evidence, that democracy is not suited for non-western societies. On the contrary, USSR and now China show how non-democratic systems can actually lead to development.

USA gave handouts to Chinese in WW2, and allowing China in WTO was in return for Chinese selling out their fellow Communist Soviets, that made China from a poor starving people to having decent lives now.

You guys should worship the white man from saving your *** from your fellow yellow, make sure you don't anger them too much, all this economy and prosperity might just vanish if the west pulls it's support to you as a supplier for it's cheap products.

If you give the Indians a dollar for every “advantage “ they have over China they’ll all be millionaires
