India health authorities are pleading with the public not to cover themselves in cow poo, under the false belief it will protect from coronavirus.
According to the latest data, India has now surpassed 23.3 million cases of COVID-19, with an estimated 254,000 deaths to date.
The country continues to break its own daily records on infection and death rates and the hospital system is burdened with nearly 90 per cent of every district seeing a high positivity rate.

While authorities say the country is reporting early signs of daily cases starting to level out, experts are cautioning people not to let their guard down and only practice approved measures for protecting against infection.
With reports locals in the state of Gujarat are visiting cow shelters at least once a week to cover their bodies in cow faeces and urine to stave off infection, doctors warn there is no evidence it will work.
In Hinduism, the cow is considered a sacred symbol and for centuries, those who practice the religion have used cow poo in prayer rituals and believe it has therapeutic and antiseptic properties.

Now there are concerns people in Gujarat are covering their bodies in the waste matter under the belief it will improve their immune system and protect them from coronavirus infection.
But experts warn this is inaccurate and it could in fact expose people to other illnesses if spread from the animal to humans.
There are also fears the actual rate of infection in the country could be up to 10 times higher than reported and doctors say as well as the cow poo method not protecting you from coronavirus, the method of applying it could actually make you more susceptible to catching COVID-19 as people are gathering in big groups to apply the waste.

Since the pandemic erupted globally, there have been several reports of different alternative measures to protect from COVID-19, all untrue.
Health authorities have had to warn the public that ingesting bleach, holding your breath, taking the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, saline nose drips and snorting cocaine will not protect or cure you from coronavirus.
