What's new

India Developing, but still a long way to go

For the first 40 years of its existence Pakistan was wealthier than India and what you say did not happen. Karachi already has the world's largest slum and it is growing

The Empire ran on minorities doing business, and before that the Mutual era ran on similar ideas. Trade, business and commerce was a local play by local stakeholders.

Point being, both krunchy and amchii are community business oriented to this day. Neither socialism nor Islamism change business dynamics by too much. Caste and community based businesses. Ismaili's, Bohras, Marwaris, Hindu Punjabi, Sikh, Parsis are famous, local Scots, Anglos, Malabari's, Konkani, Goan and Catholic, Reddy, Kamath, Jewish, Indo-French, Italian, Armenian, Afghan, Chettiars less famous.

Since World War, and in the Indo-Pak context of Sindh and Bombay, no war; but partition and terror have knocked minority biz. far more then anything in the recent past. The communities are fairly flex so they travel, re-locate, immigrate, marry across boundaries.

Sad, but natural that when business is bad; the key drivers of biz. flee.

@patentneer I am glad India is progressing. I have come to the conclusion Pakistan will never get anywhere without India moving forward. In fact it would be better if India is always slightly ahead. The reason is if Pakistan moves ahead too far all it will do is encourage massive illegal migration from Indian Muslims to Pakistan creating even more problems in Karachi and creating bigger slums. So I am happy India is doing good.

That comment about Bangalore's exports is silly. Your just cherrypicking the fruit from 1.3 billion country. And the Jaguar cars - that's great stuff.

Sorry but LoL... to your hilarious post. So you mean Pakistan would choose to lag behind India, cause of potential immigration problem of Indian Muslims.....and you are a "Think Tank"...you must be joking.

Before 80s Pak was ahead of India in many fields (including per capita), we did not witness any mass exodus of Indian Muslims then....more so, please worry about Afghan muslim migration in Karachi before even thinking of India muslim migration.

True, its what I said to him as well. What truly differentiates India and Pakistan is India's increasing prosperity that is driven by technological sophistication. Pakistan never had that base. The average Pakistani was wealthier up till the 80s because Pakistan is on the whole a more fertile place and therefore agriculturally used to be more productive. Obviously that is not the case anymore.

India is a far more innovative country with a high tech sector that is quite good. I have worked both in the USA and India and can see that the gap is narrowing. Start up culture in India is amazing and some of them do truly cutting edge work. As things currently stand, I do not see that spark in our western neighbor.

@inquilab, thanks for Metro map. As a user 2 new points:

1. Delhi Metro is a thumping success and having earned nearly a Pak. Rs. 10-15 000 Cr."s, profitable to boot.
2. Re. point 1., metro rail is now rolling out across all major cities and is on course for tier II cities already. India does rail we know, but they've really nailed mass and Metro rail. It's a high stakes Global funding, supplier side funding, local execution, political patronage, cross local collaborative, technical and marketing play all in a rapidly deve!oping country context let's not forget. Check Hyderabad's Pvt. or PPP Metro model to see how cocky things have gotten re. the city's sale of metro rights to L&T the highest bidder !

Topic change, 80-90's was the shiftiest for India while Pakistan was still on inertia from past good times so the war only came home and the shit hit the fan starting 90's and ongoing. Before that India Vs. Pak. was big contrast re. po ert and hunger Vs. Pakkstani Punjab and Sindh. Really. For 1 Sindh in Pakistan you had full Karachi and for Pak. Punjab, full Lahore Vs. 1/2 Bombay for Gujarat and 1/4 Delhi for Punjab India. Plus India got stuck with UP-MP-Bihar-Bengal ... too much if you ask me.

Miracle is in, till recently only half-&-half, how India smartened up Vs. how Pakistan screwed up. I believe India's minorities and the South did it while Pakistan's North and minorities did 'em in. Policies, governance, martial law - all bad news.
