India Developing, but still a long way to go

My friend, for a developing country, it is important that we keep our feet firmly on the ground and not get swayed by a few good indicators alone.

According to the 2011 census, the number of slum-dwellers in Mumbai is estimated to be 9 million, up from 6 million in 2001, that is, 62% of all Mumbaikers live in informal slums.

I've lived in Mumbai in my past life and love it. But it is choking... There is a need for massive urban regeneration, but that is not happening at the rate required. There is a need for massive slum redevelopment, but you can still count the no. of such projects on ur fingertips. And they've been doing such planning for the last 10-12 years.

We need to learn to appreciate what good is happening there, but also need to clearly be aware of the shortcomings. Only when we understand the challenges still remaining, will we able to overcome them and demand more from the govt. Otherwise we'll assume taht our govt. has done great wonders already and not much is left to do...

We can boast about our development on this forum and make pakistanis burn with envy, but unless we open our eyes to the what is NOT being done, we'll remain just a 3rd world country... If we want to improve, we should continue to be aware of the shortcomings and demand for more change... Sadda Haq!

But just to clarify:
(a) Lalu is no longer the railway minister. Got replaced long ago.
(b) There was a lot of news about Lalu turning around indian railways, etc. Not all of it was found to be correct by the future railway ministers.
(c) Most of the pics posted on this forum are of Metro sites of various cities. None of them come under the purview of Indian Railways (thankfully)... Each is an independent project.
(d) The indian railways modernization program has been very slow to take off, especially compared to countries like China... only recently have truly 'transformational' projects started getting planned, and are now starting construction like Delhi Mumbai freight corridor, or a few High Speed Corridors, or the National Capital Regional Rapid Transit System. Let's hope these take off in a speedy manner...

Gujarat International Finance Tec-City to have its own metro stations

AHMEDABAD: Even before the metro rail between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar has sprouted tracks, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City has already rolled out the red carpet to the Metro Express Gandhinagar-Ahmedabad (MEGA). GIFT is planning to construct the metro rail infrastructure for MEGA within it's own campus.

GIFT city officials have already proposed their intentions of taking part in the metro rail project to the state government. "We plan to construct a multi-modal transit station at GIFT and other metro stations. It's a complex job, as there will also be a commercial zone where the stations will have to be built. GIFT metro station will be different," says GIFT director Ramakant Jha.

GIFT city officials claim that Rs 300 crore has already been spent on infrastructure at GIFT. "Special road engineering techniques and underground ducts for utilities have already come up on a large portion of the GIFT non-SEZ area. We are also coming up with residential blocks for those who work in the GIFT area," says a senior official.

The extra frills in GIFT city buildings have been curbed drastically and they have been made realistic. According to Jha, after understanding investors' need for space and utilizable area, a lot of thought has gone into providing a strong framework of 29 storey buildings and open spaces.

A GIFT official told TOI, "Had we constructed with all the frills, construction costs would have come up to Rs 16,000 per square feet. Instead, we have invested in quality material and technology. The ideal cost has been brought down to between Rs 3,500 and Rs 5,000 per square feet. The construction is also affordable for investors. A major reason for scaling down the cost is that the Gujarat government has provided the land," adds the official. TNN

Bus service for visitors to the site


By February end, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City plans to start their mini-bus service for those who want to visit the site. To start with, GIFT officials say that for a token fare a special bus service will take commuters from Chandkheda to GIFT city. "The service will be basically encouraging people to come to the city. It will allow them to gauge the infrastructure and distance involved," says GIFT city director Ramakant Jha.

He adds "Till now the project was happening in isolation. But now we feel its time that people get to know the place," says Jha.

GIFT officials add that the new metro route that covers parts of the east, north and south Ahmedabad along with the BRTS network will be a trump card for the city. These transport provide a direct access to the place. It is with this intention that the mini-bus service has been started.

Nod for PDPU-GIFT city bridge

The roads and building department has finally obtained a go ahead for the PDPU-GIFT city bridge across the Sabarmati river. This will reduce the distance from Koba circle to GIFT by almost seven to eight km.

Tenders pertaining to the bridge would be the out in the following few weeks claims a senior GIFT city official. "Today commuters from Ahmedabad have to go up to Shahpur bridge to take a right turn towards GIFT road. A bridge across the Sabarmati at PDPU will give direct access a little ahead of Koba circle. This will reduce travel time," adds a senior GIFT official .

I feel there is scope for those VOLVO/Mercedes-Benz intercity bus services that are popping up all over India to go to GIFT city.

They are currently making an expressway from Gandhinagar to GIFT. The land clearance has been done and construction is in prelimiary stages.

The MEGA metro system will extend to GIFT city too.

Furthermore, there's a plan to build an international airport at Federa which is 50 km away from GIFT. There were glitches in getting environmental clearance for that project.But i think NaMO is too committed a man to let go of this project. The plan consists of creating a High speed rail network from Federa to GIFT.
