What's new

India Developing, but still a long way to go

..It's high time that GVK gives a serious thought to T1...
It is not of world standards... Expecting sky from T2.

T1B and C look pretty good IMO, it's only T1A that needs a facade overhaul. If you've used any of T1's modules recently, you'd know that they're up-to-date in the interiors' department. T2 is going to be nothing short of spectacular. :)

Can you please give me a rundown on the exact situation in Bombay regarding airports?
No pictures please, just explain it to me.

Whenever I goto Bby from Delhi, i land at the airport in Santa Cruz, and by my understanding it looks like how Delhi airport used to be 5 years back - in a word - very pathetic, not to mention small.

So what is happening? Are they building a new airport at Navi Mumbai?
Are they rebuilding the existing airport? Have they built a new terminal at the existing airport?

Sure, I'll try my best to. Terminal 1B, the original terminal at Santacruz, has been in existence since 1942. When GVK took over in 2006, they did the best they could to bring the old AAI building out of its misery by way of a massive architectural overhaul, thus giving the WWII terminal a new lease of life while keeping the original structure intact for logistical and operational reasons. Space constraints meant that no new infrastructure could be added, but even so, the domestic terminals are efficient, comfortable, extremely clean, sport a wide array of passenger facilities, and have won quite a few awards for the drastic improvement witnessed over the last couple of years. Terminal 1A (built for IC, now AI) was built back in the early 90s to augment capacity at Santacruz. GVK gave T1A a proper refurbishing conforming to international standards a few years ago, while at the same time, built a brand new module, T1C. I'm not adding photos here, but we're all aware of how well GVK's performed in this regard.

IGI T3 is a greenfield project with all the space in the world; Bombay does not have that luxury. Terminal 2 is being built in the same location as the existing Sahar terminal, the most constrained airport construction site on Earth! It's like a never-ending jigsaw puzzle - always changing to accommodate new infrastructure whilst keeping the old fully operational (as a necessity). I remember having read somewhere that the construction of this brownfield project is akin to a surgeon performing complex heart surgery on an athlete while he/she runs a marathon. I have full faith that T2 will be pretty darn awesome when it opens sometime this year.

About Navi Mumbai airport - they are going to build it, but as far as progress in any department associated with its construction is concerned, the less said the better.

I don't know if it has got discussed on this forum, but I wanted to talk about UIDAI/Aadhaar program.
It is already the world's largest biometric database (almost 300 million), and growing at about 10-20 million per month.

Aadhaar will be like US' SSN number, but more foolproof and will help to provide govt. services to the indian population. It will provide an identity to the millions of homeless people, prevent misuse of govt. funds and reduce corruption at grassroot level.

The agency (UIDAI) is very tech savvy and have made all their details available online. They a lso have a tracker to show the daily progress of ID generation: portal () uidai () gov () in/uidwebportal/dashboard () do

(I don't have 15 posts, so can't posts links here. Replace the bracket with a d-o-t :(

...GVK doesn't only have to deal with the building....to make the experience of using the airport a good one. The atitude of the support staff, their dressing ( Dark Blue uniform doesn't go well with the weather of Mumbai ...and the dressing sense.....2 size higher ...hanging out ). The worst part is the limited ( very limited) sitting arrangments.. You see people sitting on the ground ..as on railway platforms... The transfer from domestic to international airport is a nightmare.... They should make a skytrain aka Chaghi Airport.
..GVK has covered some kilometers....but it has lotto cover to come up to GMR's standards..

The blue uniform that you speak of is that of the airport's cleaning/maintenance crew, and they're a couple of sizes larger owing to the nature of the job (like anywhere else on the planet). All other staff, be it security, airline ground staff, or GVK support staff, adorn professional attire at all times, so I'm not so sure about your statement.

I assume you're talking about the limited seating at terminal 1B? That's about the only terminal that has seating constraints given the fact that the structure cannot be expanded any further, but even so, I've never once see anyone sitting on the floor. CSIA's other terminals have more than adequate seating.

The transfer from domestic to international airport is a nightmare.... They should make a skytrain aka Chaghi Airport.

These are growing pains, my friend. The future lies in the integrated T2 wherein inter-terminal transfers will become a thing of the past.

GMR's standards? LOL mate you're comparing apples and oranges here. I'm not so sure if you're aware of the complexity of the construction process at CSIA. GVK is all about quality, which you and I will have the pleasure of experiencing first hand when the new T2 opens.

Let's move on shall we...

Budget 2013: Smart cities along industrial corridors to start taking shape

Work on the first two smart industrial cities along the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) — Dholera in Gujarat and ShendraBidkin in Maharashtra — will start soon. Finance minister P Chidambaram said plans for seven new cities have been finalized while work on two more industrial corridors — Bangalore-Chennai and Bangalore-Mumbai — have started.

Acknowledging the support of the Japanese government in the DMIC project, the finance minister said, "To dispel any doubt about funding, the government would provide, if required, additional funds during 2013-14 from its share in the overall outlay for the project." Chidambaram said the DMIC project has made rapid progress. The 1,500-km DMIC will run across UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The government had earlier approved Rs 18,500 crore for development of infrastructure on this project.

Chidambaram said the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are preparing a comprehensive plan for the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor on the lines of DMIC. The corridor will be developed in collaboration with the governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

During the visit of the Japanese premier to India in December 2011, the PMs had agreed to strengthen efforts to improve infrastructure such as ports, industrial parks and surrounding facilities in Ennore, Chennai, and adjoining areas.

The next such project planned by the government is the Bangalore-Mumbai Industrial Corridor on which preparatory work has started.

Industrial areas, including Vasanth Narasapura (Tumkur), Bharamasagara (Chitradurga), Shimoga, Savanur (Hubli), Haveri, Kushtagi-Gadag, Yelburga (Gadag), Belur (Dharwad), Hukeri (Belgaum) and Navanagara (Bagalkot), will be covered as part of this project.
