A court in India has found 31 people guilty of killing dozens of Muslims in communal rioting in the state of Gujarat nine years ago.

They were found guilty of murder, attempted murder, arson, rioting and criminal conspiracy after 33 people were burned alive in a building.

Another 42 mostly Hindu defendants were acquitted on Wednesday because of a lack of evidence.
Those convicted will be sentenced later this week. They face the death penalty.

More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed when riots erupted after 60 Hindu pilgrims died in a train fire.

It was one of India's worst outbreaks of communal violence in recent years.

Muslims were blamed for starting the train fire, and Hindu mobs eager for revenge went on the rampage through Muslim neighbourhoods in towns and villages across Gujarat in three days of violence following the incident.

The special court dealing with the case sat near Sardarpura village, where the 33 Muslims sought shelter in a small house on the night of 28 February, 2002.

The victims had gathered there to get away from the rioters, who set the building alight. The bodies of 28 people were found at the scene, with five others dying later from their injuries.
Rioting in Gujarat in 2002 Gujarat's authorities were criticised for not doing enough to stop the riots

The case is one of nine trials being held in India in connection with the violence following the train fire and is one of the first in which convictions have been secured.

The Gujarat government is led by Hindu nationalist Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has been accused by rights groups - and a senior police officer in April - of tacitly supporting the rioters.

He denies the allegations but has never apologised for the riots.

Responsibility for the train fire has been the subject of fierce debate between Hindus and Muslims.

In February a special court in Gujarat found 31 people guilty of setting fire to the passenger train in the town of Godhra.

The court acquitted 63 other people of conspiracy and murder.

An inquiry commission set up by the state government said in 2008 that the burning of the train was a "conspiracy".

It examined more than 1,000 witnesses during a six-year period, found that 140 litres of petrol had been purchased as part of what it said had been a conspiracy to burn the train carriage.

R.I.P. to all the victims. Good to see justice being done

AHMABADAD, India—A court Wednesday convicted 31 Hindus for killing dozens of Muslims by setting a building on fire in Gujurat state during one of India's worst rounds of communal violence nine years ago.

For several weeks in 2002, Hindu mobs rampaged through Muslim neighborhoods, towns and villages in the state in rioting sparked by an arson attack on a train that killed 60 Hindus. Extremists blamed the train attack on Muslims.

Wednesday's verdict dealt with an arson attack on a building in Mehsana district, nearly 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Ahmadabad, the main city of Gujarat state. Thirty-three Muslims, including 20 women, who had taken shelter there were burned to death in the fire.

Judge S.T. Srivastava acquitted an additional 41 Hindu suspects of murder charges for lack of evidence.

The judge will sentence those convicted later this week. They face the death penalty.

Two of the suspects died during the trial, which had been expedited by orders from India's top court, the Supreme Court.

Relations between Hindus and Muslims have been largely peaceful since the bloody partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan upon independence from Britain in 1947. But mistrust runs deep and there are sporadic bouts of violence.

Justice for the victims.

modi never killed anyone he was found not guilty

Thats correct he wasn't found guilty of killing anyone.
Ultimately as the man in charge at the time of these atrocities should he not have accepted responsibility for the worst riots in India since partition? It seems in the past the world feels he should have at least been held responsible?

I think ultimately a statement telling the world of the wrongs of what happened would have helped in achieving solidarity between all religions involved. Internationally the USA have never forgiven him and that's probably why they rejected his visa application their.

good step.....next step should be powerful people like modi
Lol you commend the justice system and then foul them in the same statement. Modi has been under the scanner. So if he is guilty then he should be punished. Let us not draw an inference already. Then you are casting aspersions on the judiciary already.

@ #9 Doesn't matter whom the Pakistanis condemn or whom they cheer. It is our country, Pakistanis have nothing to do with it, we have to set our house in order. Perpetrators of Godhra have to be brought to book as well. Rule of law must prevail in India.

Justice should be done, most Indians, I mean an overwhelming majority do not support violence of any sort, irrespective of the cause. The occassional break down of law and order is an issue that hurts India and India's vision. However we remain committed to an India for Indians, and mob violence or terrorism of a few does not change the fact that there's only one solution - coexistence.

Doing justice in court of law brings about a sense of closure, this aspect of the solution must be persued vigorously. In addition, the govt has come out with extensive rehabilition and compensation plan for the victims.

Whats important to note is that the idea of India promises equality to all, the basic principles of our constitution and laws remain committed to that idea. This will eventually set us apart from the chaos, dictatorship, junta rule, religiously bigoted regimes and monarchies that rule Asia / Africa.

Edit - I'd like to point out that this is not the only case, scores of other people have been convicted for the Gujrat riots, including Hindus and Muslims (in addition to the Godhra incident too). This is just one more case.
