NEW DELHI: An Indian court convicted two dozen people on Thursday over a massacre during religious riots 14 years ago when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was chief minister of Gujarat state.

Judge P B Desai acquitted 36 others for lack of evidence over the killing of 69 Muslims sheltering in a residential complex in the city of Ahmedabad during the riots.

Celebrations erupted in the court room in Ahmedabad after the verdicts were read out, with victims and their families clapping and thanking the judge.

"I am happy 24 accused were convicted but sad that 36 others have been acquitted. This is incomplete justice and I will fight till the end," Zakia Jafri, whose husband was killed in the massacre, told reporters.

The massacre was one of the single worst incidents of the days-long riots that swept across Gujarat and left more than 1,000 people dead in total.

More than 300 witnesses gave evidence during the years-long trial that was delayed for so long by petitions and appeals that several of the original accused died.

Prosecutors are seeking life in prison for all accused of storming the Gulbarg Society complex and burning and hacking to death Muslims who were hiding there.

The riots have long dogged Modi who as Gujarat chief minister was accused of turning a blind eye to the violence, claims that he denies.

The violence was triggered by the death of 59 Hindu pilgrims and nationalists in a train fire on Feb 27, 2002 that was initially blamed on Muslims.

Hindus angry for revenge rampaged through Muslim neighbourhoods in some of India's worst religious riots since independence from Britain and partition in 1947. More than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed in three months of violence that hit the state after that. Riot-related cases often move slowly through India's creaky legal system.

More than 100 people have already been convicted over the riots

@Sparkle229 Actually close to 100 people have been sentenced to life imprisonment till now.

Whatever happens was absolutely terrible. But, like in any other functioning secular democracy the justice is served. Sooner or later.

I am impressed. Good job.

This is the very least that should have happened.

The Courts have once again done well.

Its worth mentioning here that it was the state police which must've carried out the investigations and placed such evidence before the court which has resulted in convictions.

Good work. The innocents (in jail for 14+ years) should now be released.

Good, Those who do not have value life should not be living in this world, How many cases are still pending?????

By the way i found this interesting........

It was done by Muslims. 31 were convicted and sentenced to life and death by the same court.

Our system works.

Surprised? :D Every paper writes for an audience.

True..... Have seen different interpretation of the same news by different news papers........ I am from a place, where every party, every religious outifits have their own news papers and channels.......

Much delayed, but better late than never.

I hope all other cases get speedily resolved, and the perpetrators punished. Restoring faith in the judiciary, the police, and the laws of the land is equally or more important for national security, as strengthening the armed forces or purchasing expensive weaponry. When people lose faith in the state apparatus, is when they turn to anti-national activities. Forcefully send the message that the state machinery will avenge any injustice. Curbing resentment against the nation will go a long way toward securing and strengthening it.

Subtle propaganda by Dawn

I noticed that, but you missed another subtle bit of propoganda.

The violence was triggered by the death of 59 Hindu pilgrims and nationalists in a train fire on Feb 27, 2002 that was initially blamed on Muslims.

Notice how they make it Muslims v/s nationalists? As if they are mutually exclusive, as if Muslims can't be nationalists, and as if Muslims attacked the victims because the latter were nationalists?

It was religious hatred, not nationalism that was at play in the Godhra carnage and the subsequent riots. The Hindu rioters were not "nationalists", were they? This is a subtle attempt at insinuating that Muslims cannot be part of Indian nationalism.

(And yes, I agree about the "initially blamed on muslims" part.)

When people lose faith in the state apparatus, is when they turn to anti-national activities.
Not necessarily. It may lead to increased crime. But that is different from treason or sedition.

Perhaps the only religious riot in India, victims of which managed to get some sort of justice! Still waiting on justice for Congress led 1984 Sikh genocide!
Keep waiting for eternity. Honestly.
