India could test Kaveri engine on Tejas by end-2013

India's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) aims to integrate the Kaveri powerplant with the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) Tejas fighter within the next nine months.

A test aircraft operated by India's Aeronautical Development Agency will be used for the integration, says an industry source familiar with the programme.

If the integration is successful, the GTRE hopes to see a Tejas fly with a Kaveri powerplant by the end of 2013.

As to whether the long-delayed Kaveri is ultimately adopted for use aboard the Tejas, the source says this will ultimately be up to the Indian air force.

In May 2012, defence minister AK Antony told parliament that New Delhi had no fixed timeframe to fully develop the Kaveri, although he said a test aboard the Tejas could occur in another three years.

Originally intended as the powerplant for the single-engined Tejas, the Kaveri was officially de-linked from the programme in 2008 owing to weight and performance issues.

The Tejas Mk I is powered by the General Electric F404, while the intended powerplant for the planned Tejas Mk II is the GE F414.

In March, Antony told parliament that the Kaveri's development cost was Rs28.39 billion ($520 million), nearly 10 times greater than the Rs3.83 billion originally allocated.

1/2 bil$ later and after this much delay, I am not interested in another deadline. Anthony seems to have given them three years time. Why not show the results quietly before that time.

Gtx kaveri produces 52.02 KN Thrust without afterburner and 81.02kn thrust with afterburner.
Rafael uses 2 X snemca M88 engines which produces 50 Kn thrust without afterburner and 75 kn thrust with afterburner

I think it will be a seprate project, It is not related to LCA development . The Kaveri will be "proof of concept" I don't think operational LCA will have KAveri on it.

As in many Discussion with "Sancho" We have agreed that Kaveri should have been separate activity from the beginning. But in 90s USA was not willing to sell us engines...

Good that Kaveri is separate project now. Good for LCA and Kaveri both... :)

the kaveri is also heavier than snecma that decreases the thrust to weight ratio of fighter

look like i missed that news... AFAIK, Kaveri in current form will be proof of concept and DRDO is not in mood to destroy the gained knowledge base, I think Kaveri will be integrated with LCA (just prototypes) and further improvement will be done. The AMCA can use these engines in future...

Not shelved but just confirmed that Mk-2 Tejas won't have it.

If GTX-35VS integration is successfully conducted and a powered flight of LSP-2 with Kaveri is done,
then we can use Kaveri for IAF Rafales as well - given GTRE sheds the weight problem.

With 82+kN thrust, Rafale can very well supercruise with Kaveri.
