India conducts war games near border with Pakistan
JAIPUR, India -- Thousands of Indian soldiers in tanks and fighter jets are practicing maneuvers in the Thar desert near the border with neighboring Pakistan in long-scheduled war games.
Army spokesman Col. S.D. Goswami said Tuesday the exercise involves 30,000 soldiers and hundreds of tanks and artillery guns and is meant to train the soldiers in actual desert conditions. Temperatures in the area are currently above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius).
The six-day-long war games in Suratgarh, 43 miles (70 kilometers) from the border, started Monday and have been code named Vijayee Bhava, or be victorious.
