New Delhi: India on Friday condemned a nuclear test conducted by North Korea, its most powerful ever, describing it as a matter of “grave concern” that the country had violated its international obligations.
The atomic test came on the 68th anniversary the country’s founding and was reported to be more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, according to some estimates.
In a statement, North Korea said it had mastered the ability to mount a warhead on a ballistic missile.
This is the fifth test by North Korea and has drawn condemnation from the US as well as China, Pyongyang’s main ally.
“It is a matter of grave concern that DPRK (North Korea) has again acted in violation of its international obligations and in contravention of the objective of the de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula that the DPRK itself has endorsed,” Indian foreign ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said.
“We call upon DPRK to refrain from such actions which adversely impact peace and stability in the region and beyond.
“India remains concerned about the proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies which has adversely impacted India’s national security,” he said.
India’s concern stems from suspected secret cooperation between Pakistan and North Korea on missile technology. India suspects Pakistan’s missile armoury has many missiles of North Korean origin and design.
