India completes propulsion system design of its new cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’ idrw.org

India has completed the propulsion system design of its new cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’ which will have a strike range of 800 kms, DRDO chief V K Saraswat has said.”The development of the system is on. We have completed the propulsion system’s design. But we have not integrated it.Once we reach the integration stage, we will show it you,” he told reporters here last night.Saraswat said the missile is a technology demonstrator.India already has in its arsenal ‘BrahMos’, a 300-km range cruise missile developed in collaboration with Russia. It has various versions for use by all the three wings of the armed forces.Saraswat said the country is also gearing to test its its indigenous Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) shield in near future, a programme, he claimed, is more sophisticated than the Chinese one.”This is one area where we are senior to China,” he said when asked to compare Indian BMD programme with that of China, which carried out its first test-firing on January 14.He was addressing a press conference on the recent test firing of Agni-III missile, which has strike range of 3500 kms and is now ready for induction in the armed forces.Asked why Pakistan never reported any failures in its missile test programme, Saraswat said, “That is the difference between the democratic India and Pakistan.”He said that even when the US, with its large technological base, started testing its BMD, seven out of 14 tests had failed consecutively. The DRDO Chief said that though China had tested its BMD capabilities just recently, India knew about it after they carried out the A-SAT test in 2007. Prior to it, the Chinese missile programme was kept under the wraps, he said.He said the Indian programme had started in 2006 and had 60-70 per cent indigenous content in it.Saraswat said Indian BMD development programme would have two phases.”In the first phase, which goes upto 2,000 km range, we will carry out exo-atmospheric, endo-atmospheric and high altitude interceptions and in the second phase, we will take care of targets beyond 5,000 km range.”On the dates of test of the BMD shield, he said it was expected to be carried out within this month.

GEEEEEEEEEEEAT one........................

Just increase the speed of development bit highter.............(My opinioun)

I am more interested in speed of nirbhay.
Cant they use some tech from brahmos and put it on 1000km range nirbhay?

I guess they can.But nirbhay is supposed be a low cost option, for induction in large numbers.

DRDO chief knew nothing, this test is not the first, after US declare to sell weapon to Taiwan, then we made this test, before this we test this system at least 20 times. The DRDO chief only to hear this first time .
second, now no one knows :which missile we use in this test? Then how did the DRDO chief compare? As:you don't know how tall the man besides you,you can't compare.

We are lucky because this man work for DRDO~~~that's why ajun and LCA delayed so long

common we are not going to give u the guy who is working on a world class system like Nirbhay and several others...
hats off to him...
We are happy because this man work for DRDO..and he is a proud Indian...:smitten:

meanwhile get back to nirbhay...... its great news really...............:yahoo:

Eherm, no, completely wrong, Jan 14th was the first Chinese BMD test.

Why Nirbhay has to be a Technology demonstrator?? Y not a proper missile sysstem. We can do away with Agni-1.

It was reported that i has only 800 km range!! I expected much more as reported.....

agreed, wiki suggests that (at least in plans) it was to have an operational range of 1000 km. Either 0.8k km is a) a conservative estimate for today's missile, or b) the operational range of this missile has been re-adjusted to be less than 1000 km.

Wiki also suggests that this will be a sub-sonic missile (less than 1 Mach, tentatively suggested at 0.7 mach).

I guess the scients not telling the exact range of Nirbhay.

Nirbhay is a low cost, higher range missile. But it would be better if we get 2000 km Nirbhay and 1000 km Brahmos. Brahmos is costlier but it is unique and can not be destroyed by enemy air defence (as of now and next future).

Looks like it has some German V-1 characteristics. Curious though as big as it is. And as slow as it is for an anti-ship missile (1,100kph). don't you think this missile which is based on old technology. Would be easy to shoot down?
