India & China well on the path to strengthening ties: Yan

Despite some outstanding issues and “certain forces that are not happy to see the progress of [their] relations,” India and China are well on the path to strengthen their cooperation both bilaterally and on the world stage, said Zhang Yan, Chinese Ambassador to India.

Inaugurating a photographic exhibition titled “New China, New Look” on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Zhang tracked the relationship between the two countries over the last six decades.

From the joint initiation of Panchsheel concept in the 1950s, the two countries are today working closely for common interests at global forums.

“In the international arena, China and India have maintained close consultation and coordination on international issues such as international trade, the financial crisis, climate change, food and energy security, anti-terrorism and so on,” he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the function, Mr. Zhang said that with regard to the upcoming climate change summit at Copenhagen, Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh was in Beijing on Friday, meeting with the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and representatives from Brazil and South Africa to craft a common strategy for developing nations.

The photographic exhibition represents modern China’s achievements, which Mr. Zhang listed: a vibrant economy based on robust agriculture, industrial growth and advancements in science and technology, a reduction of poverty, unity among various ethnic groups and an increasingly important role in international affairs. He also listed the challenges still facing China, from the disparity in development to environmental degradation.

Editor-in-chief of The Hindu N. Ram praised several recent Chinese initiatives, including the effectiveness of the stimulus package to combat the financial crisis. Almost all those who lost their jobs in export sectors have found new jobs or become entrepreneurs, he said. India also had a lot to learn from China’s internet penetration, he said.

Regarding the India-China relationship, Mr. Ram said that leaders on both sides may need to refrain from expressing formal, well-known differences between the two countries in high-profile public settings, as this may lead to misrepresentations in the media, as has happened recently with regard to alleged border incursions.

One of the high potential growth areas of the bilateral relationship is in education, and VIT University is a leading player in this space, with 400 Chinese students and India’s first Chinese language centre. VIT Chancellor G. Viswanathan lauded China’s commitment to education, noting that 100 Chinese universities received a funding of Rs. 600 crore per year.

Tamil Nadu Congress president K.V. Thangkabalu said that despite a later start in the economic reform process, India was also following in the steps of China’s economic growth.

not only China...we should vouch for good relations with Pakistan too.
but it's always the 'ifs' and 'buts' that ruin the south-asian neighborhood tranquility.

Sooner or Later, The Economic Prosperity of the Two Giants will make them closer.

well that may take sometime but both of us know that in order to prosper we both need each other .. and i think this has already started because somewhere i read that india's ongc and chinese oil research firm bid jintly for emerging markets and also compete .. so it may take some time .. just like it took some time in case of britain and france...

i know there will be some harsh and maybe insulting comments (especially fom some pakistani friends) but common goal can do wonders just like it has done in past.......

all these are just said by the ambassador to make his job in india becomes easier to tackle, whoever believe that the ties is strengthening without poking and hurdles is just a morxn???

They have to tie together. Because both are realizing without tie they cannot develop. But Pakistan President is ready to sacrifice everything for his KURSI.

@ pakistani
every country has its share of corrupt politicians.. its just that both of us ( india and pakistan) are more lucky here as we both have them in numbers ... so just hope for the best and do what you do the best....

pffft, call me cynical,
this is how things are to follow: almost guaranteed

* someone from the free Indian media is going to bring up at least one of the "touchy topics" and will try very hard to get the response he is looking for.
* The Chinese diplomat will give the robotic, official response.
He has to, or else...not good.
* Indian media bombards the mass with you-know-what....
* Indian public pissed at China ("Chini....madarchord" !..."ghandu" !)

yeah it's same old crap again - we're talking about 2 ancient countries after all. :disagree:

@bigmoneymaker

who says thir will not be hurdles .??? there will be plenty of them.. its just a hope that because of mutual interests there can be some thing like this....because in world plitics nothing can be ruled out..
20 yrs ago who would ave thought that america and iran will be at (virtual) loggerheads .. so just wait and watch and hope for the best ( because that is he only thing we can do ;) ):cheers:

@baconlover

For those who don't know : "Yan" is his Given Name (like 'Bob') "Zhang" is the Surname/Family Name.
Christ, there is a Himalaya of ignorance between the 2 people.:disagree::frown::sick:

chinese know much about them and they know less about chinese, it is just like one is beyond the fence looks at the one within the fence, no wonder chinese always take the first mover advantages.
