Why not? We respect our Mughal heritage. The Mughals were just one of many Empires to rule the subcontinent, and didn't last that long in modern India compared to some other notable ones.

In many cases of violence against Muslims in India, the victims have said that the attackers, whether police or civilians, taunted them by saying "Babur ki awlad." RSS/BJP destroyed the Baburi Masjid in an anarchic manner. Now the BJP and RSS are aiming for Taj Mahal, claiming it to be previously a Hindu temple. Had it not been for the Taj Mahal's own stature it too might have been targeted by now. Aurangzeb is often used as a tool for rationalizing violence against Muslims in India. These things really put into perspective how much Indians are proud of their Mughal heritage.
The problem is that it matters little as to what the educated and rational Indians are thinking, which you may or may not be. Same has largely applied to educated and rational Pakistanis: we too have sought heroes where no heroes actually exist. Instead of doing our own research we have been reacting to the literature produced by the Engrez, which was primarily produced for the Divide & Rule Policy. The Over Zeleous political entities in the subcontinent now want the Engrezi literature to remain in place because that's the product that runs their shop.
Btw, without going into power politics, the Mughal Empire lasted more than 300 years. Don't know how that is not long enough.
