India calls upon Israel, Palestine to exercise restraint, resume dialogue

Expressing deep concern at the escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine, India has called upon both sides to exercise maximum restraint.

"India is deeply concerned at the steep escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine, particularly, heavy air strikes in Gaza, resulting in tragic loss of civilian lives and heavy damage to property. At the same time, India is alarmed at the cross-border provocations resulting from rocket attacks against targets in parts of Israel,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in New Delhi on Thursday.

India urged both Israel and Palestine to “avoid taking actions that may further exacerbate the situation, and threaten the peace and security of the region”.

India said it remained firmly convinced that dialogue was the only viable option that could effectively address the issues confronting the region and its people.

“We call upon both sides to resume direct talks at the earliest, in adherence to the obligations assumed by them under the peace process, for a comprehensive resolution of the Palestinian issue,” said Mr. Akbaruddin.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) claimed hundreds of rockets had been fired against Israel, including at residential areas, over the last three days.

“Palestinian terrorists in Gaza have fired 96 rockets at Israel today, and 442 in the past 3 days,” claimed a tweet posted by the IDF spokesperson (@IDFSpokesperson).

At the same time, Islamist organization Hamas, in a statement issued on the website of its military wing, claimed 76 Palestinian citizens were killed and nearly 550 injured in Israeli air strikes against Gaza since Monday.

Kaled Meshaal, chief of Hamas’ political bureau, appealed to Palestinians to defend themselves.

"The Palestinian people have the right to resist and defend themselves," Mr. Meshaal told a television news channel in Doha, Qatar.

"The West wants a ceasefire. First, Mr. Netanyahu should cease his aggression, halt the construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Jerusalem, stop arresting Palestinians and end the occupation," he said.

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, spokesperson of the Israeli military, said while Israel had mobilized 20,000 troops for a possible ground operation, its focus, for the time being, remained on the intensification of air strikes.

Well can't do nothing much except waiting for things to cool down a bit in middle - east.

Well...Doing nothing is better than jumping upon the bandwagon and condemning Israel for defending herself. :D

Satisfactory? What else India can do. Palestine and Israel do not care about this shit. India does not care either. Foreign ministry had to give some kind of statement.
That's the point we just throw out some statement, otherwise both side would look for support if there is a major escalation.

Satisfactory in the sense...India didnot condemn Israel like it did previously and projected a more neutral stand.

Blunt! But true...

It is not going to be Major. Major would be when Arab world wage war against Israel. That is not going to happen. Syria and Egypt are fighting their own problems. Israel will take revenge. Hamas would fire some rockets. John kerry would get a Business visit and things will cool down in a month.
If Both Nation had been Nuclear, situation would have been entirely different. BTW, They would have nuked each other already.

It won't do Sir. Geopolitics has changed. There are more chance of India taking a stand against Sri Lanka than Israel.

Arrey mere bhayya...mein bhi vo hi kehraha hun! India's stand on Israel has changed from being pro-palestine to being more neutral.

. .
Why bother to take a stand at all? I dont see China or Russia taking a stand on this, lets sort out our own issues first before proceeding to someplace where we are not needed.

.
I feel that not only India but the rest of the world should ask BOTH sides to keep themselves in check. Some of the temporally local atrocities are begun either by Medinet Yisrael or by a Palestinian faction.

However, MY is the bigger party and should act more rationally, especially when they know some Palestinians could be hired by an eastern player to cause mischief, and ultimately cause grief to Palestinians more than anyone else.

I don't follow Middle West politics and don't know which side began this episode, but even if MY is responding, its response is irresponsibly heavy-handed, in fact downright brutal. They need to stop. And say a few words of condolence for the death of civilians at least.

.
India should either STFU or side with Israel. I will like to see how India reacts or practice restraint if one of their nuclear reactor is targeted.

It should be pro-Israel.
Ofcourse it is. ;)
But foreign policies generally will not see radical changes overnight. We have come from condemning Israel to taking a more neutral stance. In the coming days...we will take a more pro israel stand. Cheers. :)

Not for defending themself, but maybe for increasing 2 murders, into a conflict or even a full fledged war!
