India continues to position their newer defense systems from their central regions to the borders – the most recent indication is the plan to base new Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules cargo aircraft in far eastern India. This is the volatile area where India, Bangladesh, and China mingle, where natural disasters and military tension can be expected.
These new aircraft will complement a recent purchase – the heavy C-17 Globemaster also by Lockheed Martin. As noted in a recent news story, this aircraft, when delivered, will increase the Indian military’s ability to deliver cargo to high altitude and hot airfields. This aircraft is rated to carry more cargo to higher airfields than the aircraft it is replacing – the Iluyshin Il-76.
The two new types of cargo aircraft will greatly improve the ability to move rescuers to the sites of natural disasters such as the avalanche on the Siachen Glacier. India had scheduled a C-130 to bring in heavy equipment but the weather delayed the flight. These two new aircraft will enable India to move a variety of heavy equipment to higher altitude airfields than they could before.
These recent announcements continue a trend toward buying the reliable European and U.S. airpower systems, India also recently announced the intention to buy the Rafale fighter from Dassault. India has also decided to buy U.S. attack helicopters made by Boeing. The decision to select such high performance fighters and helicopters for the attack role shows how serious the Indian military is about having the most capable systems.
India’s neighbors are also modernizing their military but countries such as China do not have access to the very capable aircraft built in Europe and the U.S.
