India Bullet train project gets closer to realisation

AHMEDABAD: The dreams of Amdavadis to reach Mumbai in less than two hours have moved a step closer to realisation. The detailed project report for the bullet train between Ahmedabad-Pune has been finally submitted to the railway board.

The report has pegged the cost of the project, which covers nearly 530 km between Ahmedabad-Pune, at around Rs 56,000 crore. Of this, around Rs 50,000 crore will be used for the construction of tracks and other infrastructure alone. Officials in the western division said that once the detailed project report gets a clearance, the fund sharing will also be decided between the Maharashtra and the Gujarat governments. The bullet train, which is capable of running at 350 km per hour speed, aims to reduce the travel time between Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Pune to less than three hours.

The current travel time for the 450 km distance between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is six hours and thirty minutes by the non stop Duronto train. The same for the 100 km Pune-Mumbai is three hours. The report has also suggested alignment, fare structure and volume of passengers in the proposed high-speed corridor, the first of its kind in the country.

Officials said the pre-feasibility study by a French rail transport company reveals a travel time of 1 hour 52 minutes between Ahmedabad-Mumbai without any stops at a speed of about 350 km per hour. The same from Mumbai to Pune is estimated to be around 40 minutes.

The study has also predicted that 26.6 million passengers would travel by the bullet train every year with 2021 as the horizon year.

Officials said that the major issue would be the fund sharing between Mumbai and Pune. Gujarat wanted the train to run only till Mumbai, but on the request of the Maharashtra government the project was extended till Pune.

Officials said that the railways have already made it clear that the entire project would be on a public-private-partnership. Earlier this year, a French rail transport company was awarded the contract for conducting pre-feasibility study.

great news ........i personally prefer the mumbai pune expressway.........the roads as good as it can ever be......now well be cruising along in high speed trains..........i mean super cruising!!!!!!!!:devil::flame::flame::flame:

Gujarat Govt. is pretty keen on this project. But problems might arise from Maharashtra.

This line is proposed to start operations from 2016. So, a long way to go!!

I'm sorry but wherever you got this image, it is wrong.

Capital cost of a normal railway line is around 10 Crores / Km, without any gradient. Capital Cost of this High Speed Section is about 100 Crores/Km and rolling stock cost is another 80 crore / Km.

Edit: Oh, and also, the average speed of this corridor is going to be 170-180 Kmph, not 270-280 Kmph as quoted.

given the history of land acquisitions in india, it might take a really long time to materialise. but its a very good news.

Whatever the cost maybe but the speed factor is amazing I just wish they would extend the line all the way to Goa that would be a dream come true.

Railway minister Lalu Prasad would have us believe that an Indian bullet train, on the lines of Japan's Shinkansen or France's TGV, can be a reality in the near future. Sadly, railway officers do not share his enthusiasm.
They believe that with the kind of infrastructure the railways has at the moment, a bullet train running at 300-350 km per hour is nothing but a pipe dream.

"We are unable to run trains at maximum speed and the minister is talking of bullet trains. This is just a political gimmick that may get him some mileage from people who have no idea about the subject, particularly since he has announced that the first pre-feasibility study will be conducted between Delhi and Patna," a senior officer in Kolkata said.

Lalu has promised a bullet train between Howrah and Haldia.

Bullet trains run on dedicated tracks that are largely straight. Curves, where they exist, are extremely gentle and inclined to handle trains at that high speed. These trains cannot change tracks.

That is why Mamta Bannerjee has proposed to place these High Speed trains under a different organization and not the zonal railways. Something like an NHAI vs state road authorities.

Again, what you are quoting here is for cargo trains, but we are discussing passenger trains here. Both are proposed to have separate systems entirely.

Sorry to bear the bad news, but that section is not proposed for at least the next 25 years.

Of course they have separate lines but im saying that the Dholera project along with GIFT will go hand in hand with this bullet train project the only snag was that Maharashtra wanted it extended to Pune which has now been resolved.
