Defence Minister A K Antony said India was building its defence capabilities just as China did.

"Just as what China is doing, we are also trying to strengthen our capabilities," Antony told reporters here on the sidelines of a defence accounts event.

In the last few years government was bolstering the infrastructure and capabilities of the three forces. "Earlier we were not doing anything," he added.

Antony said in spite of "occasional troubles", the Sino-Indian border was peaceful and India wanted to resolve its issues with Beijing only through negotiations.

"We must try to understand that in spite of occasional troubles here and there, by and large the Indo-China border is peaceful," he said when asked about the increase in Chinese incursions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Antony added that India's policy was to "find a solution (for its issues with China) through negotiations and on the same hand, we have increased our effective deterrent strength."

Asked about the gap between military expenditure of the two countries, Antony said it is not a question of comparing their military expenditure with ours. Whatever is needed to strengthen our armed forces we are doing that".

Mentioning the steps taken to strengthen India's deterrent capabilities in the recent past, he said, "We are strengthening our Army, Air Force, airfields, roads and infrastructure."

Questioned about the long-pending border issues with Beijing, he said, "Of course, the border issues are long pending. After many rounds of negotiations, nothing is settled yet. But, our policy is to continue the dialogue and we are trying to settle the issue through dialogue to the satisfaction of our people."

"But the last round of talks with China ended on an optimistic note," Antony added.

Commenting on Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh, Antony said, "He went there on a political visit to release the Congress manifesto."

On the problems faced by the IAF in training its cadets after the grounding of its fleet of HPT-32 basic trainer aircraft, he said, "Whatever is the air force requirement, we have decided to fulfil that."

Listing the highlights of his visit to Russia later this month, he said , "The main agenda would be that the (Intergovernmental Military Cooperation) agreement that is operational for the last 10 years and will end in 2010. We are discussing to extend that agreement by another 10 years.

^^^ Time for a good English teacher..

english is just our toy for playing with the west. our native language which we have been using for the past 5000 years is a working language of the United Nation.

how about your "native" language?

:smokin: it is a shame that your people have to use a foreign language as the official language. it is a shame that your PM have to use a foreign language to address in international meetings.

you know why? because india is never regarded as a world power.

you can keep trolling. the fact is our economy is far stronger than yours and there is a 20-30 years gap in terms of technology and industry.

to give you a quick example: non of your rocket is powered by any india made engine yet you call yourself a space power.

ironman, india has many old , venerable languages, like Sanskrit, I think india should take these old languges in higher position, not just english , people honor your own languge before earn respect ,that's my suggestion

india outsource workers need to speak english to show their respect for the masters.

Its a good thing to promote your own language but using a foreign language that has occupied whole of the world is not a bad thing either. Most of the world's information is in English.

Chinese language is indeed a very old language, just like Sanskrit. And by the way Sanskrit is known to be the mother language of many languages. Search on the internet Pro-Indo-European languages. I am sure Sanskrit has history older than Chinese.

I think it is also not a matter to correct the spellings or language of others. This is a forum where people of different origins communicate and hence it should be the point that the point is clear:azn:

What is a troll?

In email discussion lists, online forums, and Usenet newsgroups, a troll is not a grumpy monster that lives beneath a bridge accosting passers-by, but rather a provocative posting intended to produce a large volume of frivolous responses. The term can also refer to someone making such a posting ("a troll") or to the action ("trolling", "to troll").

to give you a quick example: non of your rocket is powered by any india made engine yet you call yourself a space power.

Thanks for your valuable input. Here a broad example. Name any 3 military tech which has developed by China itself. I'm giving you an hour. Hope you will give at least one name.

There is no compulsion on using any native language at the UN...infact indian PM like AB Vajpayee had always addressed UN gereral assembly meeting in Hindi in the past.So check ur facts, before u start ur rant machine.

English is used as defacto official language in india ,because many indian arent proficient in hind, the largest spoken language, as it isnt their mother tongue and we dont force hindi up on everyone in india ,infact we promote growth of native languages of different states .

I agree. India has several languages and a good percentage of Indian population is not fluent in Hindi. English is one language which is considered neutral by most Indians and therefore has widespread usage.

Most Chinese are fluent in Mandarin. Therefore, the need of another language which will be considered neutral by different Chinese ethnicities is not required.

BTW, why the hell are we discussing languages in this thread? Back to topic please...
