India building biggest Nuclear Plant of 10,000 MW with France US$ 20 billion investment project

The 9900-MWe Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project has received environmental clearance, but with quite a few strings attached.

Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh announced the clearance with 35 conditions and safeguards during a press conference here on Sunday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan termed it a historic day and said that the project would see an investment of Rs. 1 lakh crore.

“It is the largest engineering project ever conceived in the country and the kind of investment it will bring is unimaginable,” he said. This is the second big environmental clearance in a row for the State after the Ministry of Environment and Forests cleared the decks for the Navi Mumbai international airport last week.

The Jaitapur project will come up in collaboration with French giant Areva, which will supply uranium and reactor units, according to a booklet released by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited. An agreement between Areva and NPCIL is expected to be signed during French President Nicolas Sarkozy's India visit next month.

The project involves setting up six units of 1650 MWe capacity each. The first unit is expected to be commissioned by 2017-18. It will help Maharashtra reduce its energy deficit. “Nearly 1000 hectares of land has already been acquired for the project,” Mr. Chavan said.

As for the grievances of the local community, Mr. Chavan said that the State government had formed an Empowered Group of Ministers to enhance the compensation.

. . .
It IS largest nuclear power plant ever built. Though the largest power station is
3 Gorges dam.

probably they should have chose south India for the project for security reasons.

Its almost South India only. Jaitapur is exactly in the Southern part of West India.

And you cannot build a plant in South India to generate electricity meant for North India considering the massive overhead transmission losses.

No need for north south here.

BTW, this plant in Maharsatra and for west India not north India.

Also, there will be 10,000 MW Nuke plant each in west, south, east India soon. For example 10,000 MW nuke plant in West Bengal with Russians for east India.

Exactly ---- though I did not bring the issue. I just addressed the other person's issue.

I wish India all the luck in the world dealing with the French. They just about ruined China's civilian nuclear program, I'd be surprised if they didn't try to do the same thing with India.

The French systemically bribed their way into being China's sole suppliers of reactor technology and it's only in recent years that China has moved away from their product. China just gave a life sentence to the former head of the China nuclear power generation corporation for taking bribes from the French.

Thanks, but we Banias, know how to deal with them :D

Great news.. French are known for their expertise in nuclear plants..will address the concern of the Maharashta power issues for sure.

Well I dont know about What they did to China But The French was one of the few nations who did not condemn India's nuclear tests and Instead supported us In becoming Permanent UNSC member and Also For G8.... Why would we not trust them sir?

He meant it from the perspective of ruining India's indigenous nuclear industry by occupying the market (with bribes i guess).

In the business world who doesn't do stuff like that.

Given India's history on major foreign purchases, I'd think that India would be just as susceptible to the kind of corruption I was talking about.

Correct on the first part, and for second part I'd venture to say that it is up to India to be on guard. It will stifle the indigenous nuclear research and seek to make India dependent on it for all future contracts.
