India building biggest Nuclear Plant of 10,000 MW with France US$ 20 billion project

Doesn't TN send its power surplus to Karnataka and Kerala?

Not really.TN is usually drawing more than is allotted from the grid and still faces power shortage. They buy quite a bit of power even from private producers in Karnataka, something that routinely puts them in confrontation with Karnataka in the summer.(Karnataka needs excess power only in the summer because the Hydel reservoirs are near empty then)

I think the next next step should be to tap into the vast solar and wind reserves of IndiA

Gujarat was likely to announce power projects of around 40K MW with Mukesh (new comer) in the south of gujarat but due to over capacity already, this has been put on hold for future. I think this has been moved to orissa, chatisgarh where there is non-congo govt.

If you know, Rajasthan has capacity to install 2,100 gigawatts in the thar desert alone. That equals to 21,00,000. This is what our requirement will be in 2050.

.
:woot: This is just insane.

Why not approach Rajasthan ? Actually I'm seeing a pattern...all Congress ruled states having silly ego issues.

Rajasthan is congo-ruled state. Gujarat was building Narmada Canal for Rajasthan too and moreover it was near completion too untill congo-govt. came. Now, project is on hold and sand is coming in the built canal in Rajasthan. So much expense and nothing happened.

Send it to TN man ---- We need that fvcking power.

As mention, power loss would be huged which has been already stated. Gujarat's transmission loss is around 20% (it was 35% earlier) while TN still stand around 30-35%.

Well the transmission losses would be huge.

But seriously I think it's an ego issue for Cong ruled states. Look at Maharastra for instance, there are 4-5 hour power cuts in the Vidharba region (Mumbai/Pune gets all the power)!

Maharastra is not keen to take the power generated by Gujarat. It's not because it is pricey but its because congo sarkar.

What Gujrat has achieved is unbelievable considering the fact that Congress govt. in center leaves no stone unturned to block any possible development in the states ruled by BJP..
We in Bihar are suffering from chronic power shortage and yet plan of generating hydroelectricity from Ganga was blocked by center on the accounts of International water treaty with Nepal and Bangladesh.
We can not build Dams and generate Electricity from Koshi which brings havoc to major parts of Bihar in Monsoon.
A minimum of 4 Such plans were blocked.
Thats why i respect Narendra Modi ..
Lets see when my deprived state gets its slice of development...

I could not remember any power loss in the last 15 years. If there is any bijli cut than Company has to give due notice in the newspaper about all details and when and where bijli will go away.

In Gujarat, Govt. itself now no more wants power plants until Central govt. is changed.

Given India's history on major foreign purchases, I'd think that India would be just as susceptible to the kind of corruption I was talking about.
Correct on the first part, and for second part I'd venture to say that it is up to India to be on guard. It will stifle the indigenous nuclear research and seek to make India dependent on it for all future contracts.

Hmm...tell me more about what the French did in China. I saw French CEOs interview yesterday on one Biz news channel in India and he raised concerns about many laws and had many concerns. Sorry to burst the balloon but he was quite non-commital on the investment. I think he was Areva's CEO.

Arent the French very bureaucratic?

Im my understanding, the French might also object to the liability bill as the French govt will have to give soverign guarantees and given current debt market climate thats not easy.

What do the Chinese laws say? Whose liablity is it supplier or operator?

I think there are a number of solar projects which are coming up in the eastern belt where there is a high demand for power. I read some articles a few months back that Orissa has signed deals with the solar companies to setup upto 250MW... slowly for surely we will see more investment into renewable energy sources... but for now  to nuke power :yahoo:

Not sure but currently Gujarat is progressing towards reducing transmission losses. Therefore as per Govt. of Gujarat new powerplant will be set up in such way that transmission losses are equal to nil. For this, Govt. has approved some 7 small plants of 1000 MW for upcoming 7 new planned cities (dholera, GIFT 1, GIFT 2) on the Mumbai-Delhi Industrial Corridor. This would help Gujarat to reduce overall losses to around 10% from national average of 35%.

And about Solar plant. Officially each power company has to install 10% of their installed capacity as Solar Power. So if you make 1000 MW plant, you additionally need to create 100 MW plant somewhere in Gujarat. This is because of tie up of Gujarat Electricity Board with the Forest and Environment Department Gujarat.

Interesting policy regarding solar power.
How will it reduce the transmission losses to near zero? Or did you mean that it is targeting to reduce it to 10%.

The national grid idea although good has a big issue regarding the xmission losses. Regional grids are more sustainable with multiple small scale power sources feeding into the grid.
I read somewhere that in Orissa all new industries are encouraged to participate in the regional grid since when they are setting up the captive power plants for their units, they usually install overcapacity and sell the extra power to the state.

Anyways, good to see the govt serious about getting the power issue out the door for the economy to grow.

It is quite different from any state i believe. My ancestral village is in Kutch. Let me tell you that even the remotest places in the state have water, electricity and paved roads. But one thing that Gujurat lags behind is agriculture sector. If Modi can help bring about development in the farming sector it would bring Gujurat much higher in HDI, as the poor strata of the society would benefit a lot from it.

Machi, Now you are getting greedy...we already have 2 nuclear power sites...one in Kalpakkam and other in Koodankulam. Yes I accept we dont have rivers for HE projects...but taking all the reactors to TN is like asking for a lot.

It used to.

But recently after the establishment so many economic zones comprising of IT and automotive and its ancillary manufacturing units on the Chennai,Kanchipuram,Sriperumbudur sector and the decrease in production in the NLC (Neyveli Lignite Corp) ,TN has become a power deficient state and we usually face a scheduled power cut (1pm - 4pm in my area) daily.

But things may improve after the Kalpakkam and Kudankulam nuke power plants under construction are completed.

Personally, I would like to see different parts of india developing in different sectors instead of trying to develop each area in everything..
Let the fertile lands handle agri sector while the states with already developed infrastructure handle the industries...BUT that will need a lot of understanding among states, which seems a distant dream considering the dirty regional politics going on..:frown:
