India begins development work for Sri Lanka’s KKS Port

Minister of Economic Development Hon. Basil Rajapaksa ceremonially inaugurated the Kankasanthurai Harbour Rehabilitation Project, Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka His Excellency Ashok K. Kantha, Governor of the Northern Province Major General GA Chandrasiri and Commander Northern Naval Area Rear Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne were present on the occasion.

Launching the initial phase of the rehabilitation project, the removal of six ship wrecks was flagged off by Hon. Basil Rajapaksa and a chunk of metal from ex “Edithara” superstructure was lifted by a 190-ton barge crane to symbolize the inauguration.

Not really...Iran's Chahbahar Port is the first one. But otherwise, we usually do a lot of infrastructure related work in Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Afghanistan and other neighboring countries. Sri Lanka is the second country for a port development project.

Not really.

Gwadar’s competition for trade and transport will come from Chabahar, the new Indian-financed port in Iran. A port outside of the Persian Gulf makes sense from a strategic and logistical viewpoint for Iran. The port of Chabahar was part of a plan to develop transportation infrastructure in Iran’s east for many years. Initially put in hold in 1984 it was revived in 2002 with Indian help. And the financing and engineering assistance from India is not limited to the port. India, wishing to bypass Pakistan, is also cooperating on a highway system that leads from the port into Afghanistan as well as a planned railroad to Afghanistan.
